Position: Lead Electrical Engineer - Renewables Team
We are looking for a Lead Electrical Engineer to join our renewables team. This role focuses on the design of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, including plant layout, hardware selection, system optimization, power generation analysis, and interconnection requirements. The Lead Electrical Engineer will serve as the primary client contact for electrical engineering and lead internal coordination efforts. Responsibilities also include maintaining design standards, overseeing electrical designers, and potentially supervising direct reports for administrative tasks such as timesheet approval, growth planning, and performance reviews. This position is available in multiple locations: Minneapolis, Denver, Plano, Madison, and Charlotte.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage electrical engineering for commercial and utility-scale solar projects, including design budgets and schedules.
- Ensure contractual scope is incorporated into designs and coordinate change orders with project managers.
- Prepare proposal scopes and fees for electrical engineering in response to RFPs.
- Coordinate with other disciplines such as civil, structural, and geotechnical engineering.
- Plan and allocate resources to support weekly project needs.
- Lead electrical design and produce construction documents; act as primary electrical contact for clients.
- Oversee electrical calculations and studies (short circuit, load flow, voltage drop).
- Coordinate with clients, utilities, and code enforcement officials.
- Perform QA/QC on design work for assigned projects.
- Stay current on equipment and industry best practices.
- Collaborate with electrical teams across offices for workload sharing.
- Support construction by responding to RFIs and reviewing submittals.
- Assist with marketing efforts and creation of materials related to electrical engineering.
- Supervise, train, and mentor engineers and design technicians.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Renewable Energy.
- Knowledge of NEC and NESC codes.
- Proficiency in electrical power system modeling software.
- 7-10 years of experience in electrical distribution, generation, or general electrical construction design.
- Ability to read and create construction drawings and specifications.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
- Experience with proposals, budgets, invoices, change orders, and client communication.
- Basic AutoCAD skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with utility-scale PV and/or wind plant design and construction.
- NABCEP Certification.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D.
- Electrical PE license or ability to obtain licensure in multiple states.
- Experience with energy storage systems.
- Proficiency with ETAP, CYMCAP, WinIGS, and/or DIgSILENT PowerFactory for power system modeling.
- Familiarity with PV production modeling tools (PVsyst, Helioscope, SAM).
- Experience with PV layout software (Helios 3D, PVcase, RatedPower, SolarFarmer).
- Knowledge of transient/dynamic modeling tools (PSS/E, PSCAD, EMTP).
