General Commissioning Engineer - Data Centers

JOB SUMMARY

The Senior Commissioning Specialist provides technical leadership and project oversight for the full life cycle commissioning of critical infrastructure systems, including both mechanical and electrical components. This role supports design review, construction, and functional testing to ensure systems operate as intended and meet performance standards. This role is remote with heavy travel, up to 75% of the time.

The specialist collaborates with design engineers, contractors, vendors, and client teams to validate and optimize newly installed systems across a variety of facility types, including mission-critical environments.

This position requires a self-directed professional who can independently manage responsibilities, lead multidisciplinary project teams, and contribute to broader program initiatives. The specialist will also support the development of internal standards and procedures, aligning work with organizational goals and values.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Project Management

  • Lead commissioning projects from proposal through execution, including scope, schedule, and budget development
  • Manage multiple project teams and ensure timely delivery of milestones
  • Identify risks and implement mitigation strategies to maintain cost and schedule targets
  • Ensure project scope aligns with contractual and budgetary requirements

Client & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for clients, ensuring alignment with company standards and client expectations
  • May act as Client Program Manager with responsibilities in business development and marketing
  • Support technical research and contribute to industry publications and conferences

Organizational Development

  • Mentor team members and support professional development initiatives
  • Contribute to the creation and refinement of organizational standards and training programs
  • Participate in strategic planning and hiring processes as needed

On-Site Commissioning Leadership

  • Oversee inspection, validation, and functional testing of mechanical, electrical, and control systems
  • Lead resolution of high-profile or escalated commissioning issues

Operational Excellence

  • Ensure timely and budget-conscious completion of assigned tasks and deliverables
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

REQUIREMENTS

Advanced Knowledge & Skills

  • Strong understanding of mechanical, electrical, and control system principles
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite and organized in digital file management
  • Detail-oriented with a commitment to accuracy
  • Ability to leverage AI and emerging technologies to enhance workflows and drive innovation
  • Effective communicator in both technical and non-technical contexts
  • Capable of working independently in remote environments
  • Skilled in client-facing communication and relationship management
  • Able to manage pressure and meet tight deadlines
  • Collaborative in cross-functional teams and multi-role projects
  • Analytical problem solver with strategic thinking capabilities
  • Experienced in planning and delegating work across teams
  • Able to obtain NFPA70E and/or OSHA certifications as required
  • Strong organizational and multitasking abilities
