Geotechnical Engineer

Are you a seasoned geotechnical engineer ready to take the lead on complex, high‑visibility civil infrastructure projects? Step into a role where your expertise shapes major water and wastewater systems, guides engineering teams, and drives technical excellence across an entire organization.

This is an opportunity to influence standards, set direction, and serve as the go‑to geotechnical authority-while still staying hands‑on with advanced engineering analyses and field investigations.

What You'll Lead & Deliver

As the Principal Geotechnical Engineer, you will:

Own high‑impact geotechnical projects

  • Lead the planning, investigation, design, and delivery of large, complex geotechnical engineering initiatives.
  • Conduct and oversee field investigations for underground water/wastewater infrastructure and environmental conditions.

Be the technical authority

  • Perform and review advanced analyses: soil/rock behavior, slope stability, foundations, corrosion control, tunnel design, load testing, embankments, failures, and more.
  • Provide expert guidance to internal teams, junior engineers, and cross‑functional partners.

Drive standards & innovation

  • Develop or update geotechnical design guidelines, standard details, criteria, and specifications.
  • Evaluate new materials, technologies, and design methods for possible adoption.

Solve problems that matter

  • Support construction teams with issue resolution, submittal reviews, and technical troubleshooting.
  • Prepare clear, high‑level engineering reports, assessments, and recommendations.

Oversee project success from concept to commissioning

  • Project manage infrastructure initiatives: planning → design → construction → testing.
  • Collaborate with consultants, contractors, suppliers, and internal divisions.

What Makes You a Strong Fit

Technical Expertise

  • Deep knowledge across geotechnical engineering, including subsurface investigations, foundation systems, rock and soil mechanics, slope stability, tunneling, soil nailing, rock anchors, and failure investigations.
  • Strong understanding of water/wastewater engineering and municipal design practices.

Communication & Leadership

  • Ability to explain complex concepts clearly-verbally and in writing.
  • Confident decision‑maker with sound engineering judgment.
  • Skilled at guiding, mentoring, and influencing engineering teams.

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil, Environmental, Sanitary, or related engineering discipline.
  • 5+ years of engineering experience, including at least 1 year leading complex engineering projects.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in Maryland, or ability to obtain it within 12 months.

Additional Requirements

  • Valid driver's license and ability to obtain a work‑related driving permit.
  • Completion of required safety and compliance training.
  • Annual financial disclosure as required for the role.

Work Environment

This role blends office leadership with real-world field engagement. You'll occasionally work in environments involving:

  • Confined spaces
  • Weather exposure (cold/heat)
  • Dust, noise, and construction environments
  • Field equipment, ladders, and site access needs
