Role Overview

We are supporting a nationally recognized engineering consultancy as they continue to expand their water resources capabilities in the Dallas region. To advance this growth, we are seeking a senior‑level Hydrology & Hydraulics (H&H) professional to join their Houston office. The H&H Practice Lead is a senior leadership role responsible for overseeing and growing the Hydraulics & Hydrology capability within the organization. This individual combines deep technical expertise with strong project leadership and commercial acumen to deliver complex water infrastructure and flood risk projects while driving strategic growth of the H&H practice.


Key Responsibilities

Practice Leadership & Strategy

  • Lead, develop, and expand the Hydraulics & Hydrology (H&H) practice, aligning with wider business objectives.
  • Define and implement the technical and commercial strategy for H&H services across the organization.
  • Identify new market opportunities and support business development efforts, including bids and proposals.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with key clients, regulators, and industry stakeholders.

Project Leadership & Delivery

  • Act as Project Director or Senior Project Manager on complex H&H projects, including flood risk management, drainage design, river modelling, and infrastructure resilience.
  • Ensure delivery of projects on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards.
  • Oversee resource planning, risk management, and project financial performance (P&L accountability).
  • Provide governance and assurance across multiple concurrent projects.

Technical Excellence

  • Serve as the technical authority for hydrology and hydraulic modelling, including 1D/2D modelling, flood risk assessments, and drainage strategies.
  • Review and approve technical outputs, ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Provide guidance on the application of tools such as Flood Modeller, TUFLOW, InfoWorks ICM, or similar platforms.
  • Champion innovation, digital tools, and best practices within the H&H discipline.

Team Leadership & Development

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of engineers and consultants, from junior to senior levels.
  • Foster a high-performance culture focused on collaboration, quality, and continuous improvement.
  • Support recruitment and succession planning within the H&H practice.
  • Promote knowledge sharing and technical development across the team.

Client & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Act as a trusted advisor to clients, providing strategic guidance on water-related risks and solutions.
  • Lead high-level client interactions, workshops, and presentations.
  • Liaise with regulators, local authorities, and other stakeholders to support project approvals and compliance.

Key Requirements

Experience & Leadership

  • Extensive experience in hydraulics and hydrology within a consultancy or engineering environment.
  • Proven track record as a Senior Project Manager or equivalent, delivering complex water infrastructure or flood risk projects.
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary teams and managing project portfolios.

Technical Expertise

  • Strong knowledge of hydrological assessment and hydraulic modelling techniques.
  • Experience with industry-standard tools such as TUFLOW, ESTRY, Flood Modeller, InfoWorks ICM, HEC-RAS, or similar.
  • Solid understanding of US regulations, including Environment Agency guidance and SuDS principles.

Commercial & Strategic Skills

  • Demonstrated experience in business development, bid preparation, and client relationship management.
  • Strong financial and commercial awareness, including project budgeting and forecasting.
  • Ability to identify growth opportunities and drive business performance.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Hydrology, or a related discipline.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) License required
