Position Overview
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced professional to lead our siting strategy for utility-scale energy storage development. This role involves securing land agreements, easements, and other surface-use and mineral rights agreements necessary for project success.
The ideal candidate will develop and execute land acquisition strategies, manage external land agents and brokers, and oversee the siting process from initial outreach to agreement execution. This position requires close collaboration with internal teams including Market Analytics, Development, Legal, and Engineering. Travel up to 30% across North America is expected.
Key Responsibilities
- Initiate and manage relationships with landowners to secure long-term agreements for energy storage development.
- Develop and implement land acquisition campaigns, including landowner identification, outreach, and contract negotiation.
- Negotiate and close competitive land leases and related agreements with a strong understanding of legal terms.
- Manage the full site acquisition lifecycle from outreach to agreement execution.
- Lead assigned projects, ensuring deadlines and objectives are met.
- Educate landowners on battery energy storage systems through presentations and direct engagement.
- Collaborate with legal to ensure accurate and complete agreements.
- Provide regular updates to Development Leads and maintain weekly status reports.
- Transition site maintenance responsibilities to execution teams post-acquisition.
Financial & Organizational Scope
- Ensure land valuation and lease agreements are market-based and competitive.
- Collaborate primarily with development, permitting, and legal teams.
Reporting Relationships & Interactions
- Reports to the Director of Storage Development.
- Works cross-functionally with internal teams to ensure site viability and low development risk.
- Interfaces with landowners, external agents, stakeholders, and market counterparties.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree required.
- Minimum 3 years of experience in land negotiation and acquisition.
- Strong legal understanding of land agreements and ability to manage regional counsel.
- Experience with title, mineral matters, and project finance/permitting.
- Knowledge of economic opportunities in regulated and deregulated markets.
- Advanced proficiency in MS Excel; strong skills in Word and PowerPoint.
- Ability to research land market value and utilize real estate tracking tools.
- Skilled in negotiating with sophisticated landowners and investors.
- Excellent organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Comfortable in a fast-paced, deal-driven environment.
- Resourceful and entrepreneurial mindset.
- Ability to present complex issues clearly and succinctly.
