Lead Engineer (Electrical Systems)
Position Overview:
This role offers the opportunity to serve as a lead electrical engineer within a collaborative project team, contributing to the design, analysis, and modification of electrical systems for a variety of infrastructure projects-from retrofitting existing facilities to supporting new power generation installations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the development of power distribution system designs and prepare technical specifications for procuring major electrical equipment and installation services.
- Support project management efforts to ensure deliverables are completed on schedule, within budget, and to the required quality standards.
- Coordinate design activities to ensure compliance with applicable codes, standards, and client requirements.
- Create and review functional design documentation, including single-line diagrams, relay and metering layouts, cable block diagrams, and schematics.
- Conduct and validate detailed engineering calculations such as voltage drop analysis, protective relay settings, arc flash assessments, and auxiliary power system studies.
- Collaborate with vendors to develop bills of material and equipment specifications, and provide informed recommendations to stakeholders.
- Produce clear, concise technical reports and studies that align with client expectations and internal formatting standards.
- Perform independent reviews of engineering work, including drawings and calculations, to ensure accuracy and consistency.
- Mentor junior engineers, providing technical guidance and support for professional development.
- Engage in peer learning through structured processes and professional communities focused on continuous improvement.
- Participate in site visits for design reviews, construction coordination, and field verification.
Essential Skills and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program; specialization in power systems is preferred.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license strongly preferred; candidates must be eligible and willing to obtain licensure if not already held.
- Minimum of 8 years of experience in power plant or industrial facility design, with a focus on detailed, integrated system design for new builds or upgrades.
- Proven experience in equipment selection, material specification, control philosophy development, and preparation of engineering calculations.
- Strong background in electrical system design, including medium and low voltage distribution systems, communication systems, and analytical modeling.
- Proficiency in electrical system analysis tools such as ETAP and/or SKM.
- Solid understanding of electrical power distribution equipment and technologies.
- Demonstrated ability to serve as a lead engineer and liaison between engineering teams and clients.
- Experience reviewing and validating engineering designs and documentation prepared by others.
Valued but Not Required:
- Familiarity with instrumentation and controls engineering.
- Experience in project management and/or business development.
- Exposure to construction and system start-up activities is a plus.
