Position Summary
The Survey Crew Chief is responsible for leading and performing field surveying operations in support of land development, transportation, and infrastructure projects. This role oversees survey crews, ensures accurate data collection, maintains equipment, and coordinates with project managers to complete work safely, efficiently, and according to project specifications.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and supervise daily field survey operations, including boundary, topographic, construction staking, ALTA/NSPS, and as-built surveys
- Operate survey instruments and equipment such as total stations, GPS/GNSS receivers, data collectors, and levels
- Interpret plans, plats, legal descriptions, and project specifications to execute field work accurately
- Ensure proper setup, calibration, and maintenance of surveying equipment
- Maintain accurate field notes, sketches, and electronic data for transfer to the office
- Coordinate with project managers, engineers, and clients regarding field activities and schedules
- Monitor crew productivity and ensure projects are completed on time and within scope
- Enforce safety procedures and company policies on all job sites
- Train and mentor instrument operators and field crew members
- Identify and troubleshoot field issues and report discrepancies to the project team
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required; associate degree in surveying, civil engineering, or related field preferred
- Minimum of 3-5 years of progressive experience in land surveying, including crew leadership
- Strong working knowledge of survey principles, procedures, and equipment
- Proficiency with GPS/GNSS and conventional survey methods
- Ability to read and interpret construction plans, plats, and legal descriptions
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and terrain
- Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Indiana Surveyor Intern (SI) certification or ability to obtain
- Experience working on transportation, municipal, or commercial development projects
- Familiarity with data collection and surveying software (e.g., Trimble, Carlson, Leica, AutoCAD Civil 3D field workflows)
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift and carry survey equipment up to 50 pounds
- Ability to walk long distances over uneven terrain
- Ability to stand, bend, stoop, and work outdoors for extended periods
Work Environment
- Combination of fieldwork and limited office interaction
- Work performed on active construction sites, roadways, and undeveloped properties
- Occasional overtime may be required to meet project schedules
