Principal Engineering Advisor
Position Summary
A leading engineering and consulting organization supporting the electric utility industry is seeking an experienced Principal Engineering Advisor to provide technical leadership on substation automation, protection and control, and SCADA initiatives. This position will be responsible for leading the design, implementation, and delivery of automation solutions for transmission and substation projects while supporting business development and proposal activities.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as a technical lead for substation automation, protection and control, and SCADA projects.
- Develop and oversee automation system architectures utilizing modern processor-based hardware and software platforms.
- Perform engineering studies and detailed design work for SCADA, communication, and automation systems.
- Prepare engineering calculations, technical specifications, design packages, procurement documentation, and construction-ready deliverables.
- Review engineering submissions, evaluate technical designs, address client questions, and support project documentation processes.
- Lead technical execution of substation and transmission projects with an emphasis on protection, control, and automation systems.
- Produce engineering drawings and design packages for new installations, upgrades, and modernization projects at substations and generation facilities.
- Design control panels, communication systems, and associated equipment.
- Develop communication network solutions for utility substation environments.
- Support the implementation and integration of station controllers, RTUs, HMIs, PMUs, battery monitoring systems, and PLC-based applications.
- Develop protection and control philosophies, equipment specifications, panel layouts, bills of materials, and logic/configuration files.
- Conduct engineering evaluations, modeling, and performance analysis related to power system protection and automation.
- Contribute to client-facing activities, proposal development, and strategic project pursuits.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or a closely related technical discipline.
- At least 7 years of experience in electrical utility, power systems, SCADA, automation, or related engineering environments.
- Minimum 6 years of experience leading and delivering substation automation and SCADA projects from design through implementation and commissioning.
Desired Technical Experience
Candidates should demonstrate experience in the following areas:
- SCADA system design, configuration, modeling, and analysis.
- Managing projects within a utility, consulting, or electric power environment.
- Application of industry-standard communication protocols, including DNP3, Modbus, and IEC 61850.
- Development of substation automation systems utilizing modern hardware and software-based control platforms.
- Configuration, programming, testing, and commissioning of automation systems, substation gateways, and programmable logic controllers (PLCs).
- Protection and control engineering for medium- and high-voltage utility facilities.
- Utility communication networks and substation integration technologies.
Travel Requirements
- Ability to travel throughout the United States for project execution, client engagements, and industry-related activities.
- Travel may be required for approximately 50% of the role.
