Position Summary
The Safety Manager is responsible for ensuring a safe work environment for all employees and maintaining full compliance with OSHA, DOT, MSHA, EPA, and other applicable safety regulations. This role provides leadership to Field Safety Representatives and field supervisors, oversees company-wide safety programs, leads compliance and risk-reduction initiatives, and serves as a member of the Leadership Team. The position focuses on protecting employees from injury and the organization from regulatory, legal, and financial risk while promoting a strong safety culture across all operations.
Essential Functions
- Develop, implement, and enforce comprehensive organization-wide safety programs and policies
- Ensure compliance with OSHA (29 CFR 1926), DOT (FMCSA), MSHA, EPA, and all other regulatory requirements
- Exercise authority to stop work in the presence of imminent safety hazards
- Establish site-specific safety plans (SSPs) and job hazard analyses (JHAs)
- Develop specialized safety programs, including confined space, fall protection, excavation, and emergency response
- Lead, manage, hire, train, and develop Field Safety Representative(s)
- Provide safety leadership and support to superintendents, foremen, and field crews
- Participate in strategic planning as part of the Leadership Team
- Conduct jobsite audits, safety inspections, and compliance reviews
- Investigate incidents, injuries, near-misses, vehicle accidents, and utility damage
- Perform root cause analysis and implement corrective actions
- Manage Workers' Compensation, insurance claims, and return-to-work programs
- Administer post-accident, random, and reasonable-suspicion drug and alcohol testing
- Oversee OSHA 300 Logs, regulatory reporting, and incident notifications
- Represent the company during regulatory inspections and client safety meetings
- Develop and manage safety training programs and new hire orientations
- Ensure all required safety training is up-to-date and properly documented
- Conduct environmental, fleet, and risk audits to reduce incidents and operational costs
- Track EMOD scores, injury trends, and key safety performance metrics
- Promote proactive safety practices and employee engagement
- Coordinate with HR, Operations, Legal, and Executive Leadership
- Approve safety equipment purchases and manage related budgets
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Construction Management, or related field
- CSP or ASP certification strongly preferred
Required Qualifications
- OSHA 30-Hour Construction certification
- Minimum of 5 years of safety management experience in construction
- Expert knowledge of OSHA construction standards
- Strong understanding of DOT, MSHA, and EPA requirements
- Experience with incident investigation and claims management
- Strong leadership and communication abilities
- Proficiency with safety management and incident tracking systems
