Senior Building Envelope Consultant

Lead complex projects without stepping away from the technical work

A specialist engineering and building consulting firm is seeking an experienced building envelope professional to join its Houston team.

This opportunity is suited to a licensed Architect or Engineer who can lead projects, advise clients, and provide technical direction across both design and construction.

The successful candidate will manage building envelope assignments involving new and existing properties. The work will include technical document review, project coordination, field observations, reporting, and the resolution of design and construction-related issues.

This is a strong opportunity for someone who wants greater responsibility for projects and clients while remaining closely involved in technical work.

The Opportunity

You will lead building envelope projects from initial planning through construction, balancing technical quality with schedules, budgets, resources, and client expectations.

Rather than being confined to one part of the project lifecycle, you will work across design review, technical coordination, field observations, testing, reporting, and construction quality assurance.

You will also help develop less experienced professionals, strengthen client relationships, and support the continued growth of the practice.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the technical and commercial delivery of building envelope consulting assignments
  • Review drawings, specifications, shop drawings, submittals, and related project documentation
  • Identify technical, constructability, continuity, and performance risks
  • Develop clear recommendations, details, sketches, and written reports
  • Coordinate with owners, architects, contractors, consultants, and field teams
  • Lead project and technical coordination meetings
  • Oversee field observations, testing, inspections, and construction quality reviews
  • Manage project scope, schedules, budgets, resources, and deliverables
  • Communicate project progress, technical concerns, and required actions clearly
  • Review field findings and technical reports for accuracy and usefulness
  • Guide developing consultants and field staff
  • Support proposals, client relationships, and future project opportunities
  • Respond effectively when urgent technical or project issues arise
  • Contribute to the improvement of project delivery and technical standards

Project Exposure

Projects will involve exterior wall, roofing, waterproofing, glazing, and related building enclosure systems.

Assignments may include:

  • New-construction design review
  • Building envelope consulting
  • Exterior wall and façade systems
  • Roofing and waterproofing
  • Windows, glazing, and transitions
  • Field observations and performance testing
  • Construction quality assurance
  • Technical reporting
  • Existing-building assessments
  • Repair and rehabilitation work
  • Construction-phase technical support

You are not expected to have identical experience across every system. The priority is a strong understanding of how building enclosures perform, the ability to recognise technical risk, and the judgement to involve additional specialists when required.

What You Bring

  • Degree in Architecture, Engineering, Building Science, or a related discipline
  • Active professional registration in architecture or engineering
  • Significant experience in building envelope consulting, design, construction, or a closely related field
  • Experience leading projects through design and construction
  • Strong ability to interpret architectural drawings and technical documentation
  • Understanding of exterior building systems, materials, and construction practices
  • Confidence working directly with clients, contractors, architects, and multidisciplinary project teams
  • Experience managing project schedules, budgets, resources, and technical deliverables
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to prepare and review clear technical reports
  • Ability to balance detailed technical review with wider project priorities
  • Experience providing direction to developing professionals or field staff
  • Interest in mentoring others and contributing to client development

An advanced degree or relevant industry credentials would be beneficial, but practical technical experience, professional registration, and project leadership are more important.

The Person They Are Looking For

The right person will be detailed enough to identify a risk within an enclosure transition, while remaining aware of how that issue affects the wider project.

You should be comfortable moving between:

  • Reviewing technical drawings and specifications
  • Leading a project coordination meeting
  • Explaining a design or construction concern to a client
  • Guiding a field professional through an observation
  • Developing practical technical recommendations
  • Managing project scope, schedule, and budget
  • Supporting a proposal or client discussion
  • Mentoring someone earlier in their enclosure career

The firm values people who are technically credible, responsive, collaborative, and willing to take ownership.

This role will suit someone who can challenge a detail, identify a problem, or provide firm technical advice without creating unnecessary friction within the wider project team.

Why Consider It?

  • Lead complex building envelope projects
  • Remain closely involved in technical decisions
  • Work across design review, construction, and field delivery
  • Take ownership of project scope, quality, schedule, and financial performance
  • Work directly with owners, architects, contractors, and consultants
  • Develop broader client and commercial responsibility
  • Mentor developing professionals
  • Influence technical quality and project delivery standards
  • Progress into wider technical, project, and client leadership
  • Join an established Houston team with access to varied project work
  • Receive competitive compensation and a comprehensive benefits package

Compensation and Benefits

The firm offers a competitive package aligned with professional registration, technical experience, project leadership, and client-facing capability.

The wider offering includes:

  • Competitive base salary
  • Bonus potential
  • Healthcare coverage
  • Retirement benefits
  • Paid time off and company holidays
  • Professional development support
  • Licensure and certification support
  • Continuing technical education
  • Clear progression into broader project, client, and team leadership

The Opportunity in Summary

This role is intended for an experienced building envelope professional who wants greater ownership of projects, stronger client exposure, and a credible route into wider leadership.

You will lead technically complex assignments, remain involved from design through construction, guide developing professionals, and help clients make better decisions about building performance.
