About the Opportunity

A leading provider of advanced water and wastewater treatment solutions is seeking a Senior Process Engineer to join its growing engineering team. This position plays a critical role in the design, development, and delivery of complex treatment systems serving industrial, municipal, and energy-sector clients throughout North America.

The successful candidate will serve as a senior technical resource, providing engineering leadership across the project life cycle while supporting design quality, operational excellence, and the continued development of junior engineering staff. This role may also involve site-based project support during commissioning, startup, and construction phases.

Position Overview

The Senior Process Engineer will take ownership of process engineering activities for large-scale treatment projects, from concept development through startup and final commissioning. This individual will be responsible for applying professional engineering expertise to process design, reviewing technical deliverables, and acting as a key liaison among project management, fabrication, procurement, and field teams.

Candidates must possess an active Professional Engineer (PE) license and be capable of serving as the Engineer of Record when required.

Key Responsibilities

Engineering Leadership & Project Execution

  • Lead the process engineering effort on complex water and wastewater treatment projects.
  • Serve as Lead Process Engineer, Systems Engineer, Project Engineer, or Engineer of Record depending on project requirements.
  • Provide technical oversight throughout project development, detailed design, procurement, fabrication, testing, commissioning, and startup.
  • Maintain accountability for the accuracy and quality of engineering deliverables.

Process Design & Analysis

  • Develop and maintain process design criteria, process flow diagrams, and mass balance calculations.
  • Perform advanced engineering calculations related to hydraulics, chemical treatment systems, process performance, and equipment sizing.
  • Review and approve Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs).
  • Participate in design reviews, risk assessments, and process safety evaluations.
  • Evaluate process technologies and recommend solutions that meet project performance objectives.

Equipment & Technical Documentation

  • Define equipment specifications and coordinate vendor evaluations.
  • Support supplier selection and technical review of major process equipment.
  • Review bills of material to ensure technical accuracy and project alignment.
  • Prepare and approve engineering reports, testing protocols, commissioning procedures, operating manuals, and technical submittals.
  • Contribute to control narratives and process control strategies.

Quality Assurance & Compliance

  • Apply engineering stamp and seal to calculations, drawings, and related documentation when required by licensing regulations.
  • Verify engineering work complies with applicable codes, standards, and company procedures.
  • Review work completed by engineers and designers to ensure technical accuracy and consistency.
  • Oversee development and verification of final as-built documentation.

Manufacturing, Construction & Startup Support

  • Provide technical guidance to fabrication, construction, and commissioning teams.
  • Assist with resolving field issues and unexpected technical challenges.
  • Participate in Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT), equipment verification, startup activities, and commissioning efforts.
  • Drive root-cause investigations and implement corrective actions when required.
  • Support on-site project execution and troubleshoot process-related issues.

Mentorship & Technical Development

  • Coach and develop junior process engineers and technical staff.
  • Review engineering work products and provide constructive feedback.
  • Support professional growth initiatives, including preparation for PE licensure and technical skill development.
  • Promote engineering best practices across the team.

Client & Business Support

  • Participate in technical discussions with clients and stakeholders.
  • Assist with proposal preparation, scope development, and project planning activities.
  • Support business development efforts through technical expertise and project input.

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a closely related technical discipline.
  • Additional engineering or science backgrounds may be considered depending on relevant industry experience.

Professional Experience

  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
  • Ability to obtain additional state registrations through reciprocity is preferred.
  • At least 7 years of progressively responsible engineering experience in water treatment, wastewater treatment, industrial process systems, or comparable process industries.
  • Experience serving as a lead engineer or Engineer of Record on multidisciplinary projects is highly desirable.

Technical Skills

  • Strong understanding of process engineering principles, including fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, mass and energy balances, and treatment process design.
  • Knowledge of applicable engineering codes, standards, and industry best practices.
  • Experience reviewing and developing P&IDs and engineering documentation.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD required.
  • Experience with process modeling or simulation software is advantageous.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and develop engineering team members.
  • Strong organizational and project management capabilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with clients, contractors, vendors, and internal stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to make sound technical decisions and solve complex engineering problems.

Travel Requirements

  • Ability to travel throughout North America as required to support project execution, commissioning, and startup efforts.
  • Travel assignments may vary in duration from short visits to extended site deployments.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work in office, manufacturing, and industrial project environments.
  • Regular standing, walking, climbing stairs or ladders, bending, and reaching may be required.
  • Occasional lifting of materials or equipment weighing up to approximately 40 pounds.
