Senior Stormwater Engineer

Senior Stormwater Engineer
Richmond, VA

I'm working with a well-established, employee-owned engineering consulting firm that is looking to add a Senior Stormwater Engineer to its growing Virginia team. The company has a strong reputation across transportation, infrastructure, and water resources projects and offers the opportunity to play a key role in expanding its stormwater practice while working alongside a highly collaborative multidisciplinary team.

This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys a mix of technical leadership, project management, client engagement, and mentoring. The role is ideal for an experienced engineer who understands Virginia stormwater regulations, drainage design, permitting, and municipal compliance programs, and is interested in helping shape the future growth of a water resources team.

Compensation: $125,000 - $150,000+ depending on experience

What You'll Be Doing

  • Lead and manage stormwater, drainage, and water resources projects from planning through delivery
  • Oversee project scope, schedules, budgets, and client communication
  • Perform and review hydrologic and hydraulic analyses, watershed studies, and drainage design
  • Support stormwater management, erosion & sediment control, NPDES permitting, and related regulatory compliance efforts
  • Assist municipalities with MS4 compliance initiatives and TMDL-related programs
  • Prepare plans, specifications, reports, and cost estimates
  • Coordinate with clients, agencies, subconsultants, contractors, and internal project teams
  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to technical staff development
  • Participate in proposals, interviews, and business development efforts

What They're Looking For

  • PE license in Virginia (or ability to obtain quickly through reciprocity)
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related field
  • Approximately 10+ years of civil and water resources experience
  • Strong background in stormwater management, drainage design, permitting, and hydrology/hydraulics
  • Experience with transportation-related drainage projects in Virginia
  • Knowledge of Virginia stormwater regulations, MS4 programs, and TMDL requirements
  • Familiarity with agencies such as VDOT, DEQ, local municipalities, and federal permitting authorities
  • Experience with HEC-RAS and other industry-standard drainage and modeling tools
  • Comfortable managing projects, leading teams, and working directly with clients

Preferred Experience

  • Erosion & Sediment Control certifications
  • Stormwater inspection or plan review certifications
  • Knowledge of Virginia's Runoff Reduction Method
  • Established relationships with local and state agencies
  • Experience with VDOT and locally administered transportation projects

Why It's Worth Considering

  • Employee-owned company with long-term stability
  • Strong backlog of transportation and infrastructure work
  • Opportunity to help grow and influence a water resources practice
  • Hybrid work flexibility
  • Clear path for continued leadership growth
  • Competitive compensation, retirement benefits, ESOP participation, and comprehensive healthcare coverage

This role would suit someone looking to step into a highly visible position where they can combine technical expertise, project leadership, mentoring, and client development while helping expand a growing stormwater presence across Virginia.
