Stormwater Engineer

Stormwater Project Engineer

Richmond, VA | Hybrid Flexibility

I'm working with an employee-owned engineering consulting firm that is continuing to grow its water resources practice in Virginia and is looking for an experienced MS4 Stormwater Engineer to join its Richmond team.

This role offers the opportunity to work directly with local governments and municipalities on some of Virginia's most pressing stormwater, regulatory compliance, and water quality challenges. The team is looking for someone who understands the technical, regulatory, and client-facing aspects of MS4 programs and enjoys helping municipalities navigate permit requirements while developing practical, long-term stormwater solutions.

Compensation: Competitive and commensurate with experience

What You'll Be Doing

  • Support and manage municipal stormwater and MS4 compliance programs
  • Work directly with local government clients on permit implementation and regulatory requirements
  • Develop and review stormwater management plans, BMP retrofits, and watershed improvement projects
  • Assist with TMDL implementation strategies and water quality initiatives
  • Perform stormwater modeling, drainage analyses, and watershed evaluations
  • Prepare technical reports, permit documents, presentations, and compliance documentation
  • Coordinate with regulatory agencies, stakeholders, and municipal staff
  • Manage project schedules, budgets, and client communication
  • Mentor junior staff and contribute to project delivery efforts

What They're Looking For

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil, Environmental, or related Engineering field
  • PE license preferred or ability to obtain
  • Strong background in stormwater management and municipal infrastructure
  • Experience working with MS4 permit compliance programs
  • Knowledge of Virginia stormwater regulations and water quality requirements
  • Experience collaborating with municipalities and regulatory agencies
  • Strong communication and project coordination skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and client relationships

Technical Experience Desired

  • MS4 permit compliance
  • TMDL implementation planning
  • Stormwater master planning
  • Watershed studies and assessments
  • Stormwater BMP design and retrofit projects
  • Hydrologic and hydraulic modeling
  • Water quality improvement initiatives
  • Erosion and sediment control
  • Regulatory permitting and compliance
  • GIS, HEC-RAS, SWMM, ArcGIS, or similar industry software

Why It's Worth Considering

  • Opportunity to work directly with municipalities across Virginia
  • Strong mix of technical work, client interaction, and project management
  • Employee-owned company with long-term stability
  • Growing water resources practice with a strong project backlog
  • Collaborative team environment with experienced technical leadership
  • Flexible work arrangements and strong career growth opportunities
  • Competitive compensation and comprehensive benefits package

This would be a great fit for someone who enjoys the intersection of stormwater engineering, environmental compliance, and municipal consulting, and wants to play a meaningful role in helping communities meet their water quality and stormwater management goals while continuing to grow into a senior technical or project leadership position.
