Senior Substation Designer - REMOTE
Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced Senior Designer to lead the preparation of comprehensive design packages for high-voltage substation. This role is ideal for a professional with strong expertise in both physical layout and protection & control drafting, who can work independently and collaborate effectively with engineering teams and project stakeholders. The position involves producing and reviewing CAD drawings, maintaining design standards, and supporting all phases of projects-from initial concepts to construction-ready deliverables.
Core Responsibilities
Protection & Control Drafting
- Develop detailed schematics for AC/DC circuits, control systems, and relay logic.
- Prepare single-line, three-line, and interconnection diagrams.
- Create wiring diagrams for panels, relay racks, and equipment terminations.
- Incorporate SCADA, RTU, and communication system layouts.
- Coordinate with engineers to ensure accurate device configurations.
Physical Design Drafting
- Produce layout drawings including plan views, elevations, and sectional details.
- Draft conduit and cable routing plans, grounding layouts, and equipment arrangements.
- Prepare foundation and structural support drawings in collaboration with civil/structural teams.
- Generate bills of materials, cable schedules, and panel schedules.
CAD Standards & Coordination
- Apply and maintain client-specific drafting standards across all deliverables.
- Perform quality checks and redline reviews of drawings from junior team members.
- Collaborate with engineers to resolve design issues and incorporate field markups.
- Manage organized drawing sets and revision control throughout the project lifecycle.
Qualifications
- Associate degree or technical diploma in drafting/design or related field.
- 8+ years of experience in electrical design, with emphasis on both physical and P&C drafting.
- Proficiency in CAD platforms such as AutoCAD or MicroStation.
- Familiarity with industry standards (e.g., NESC, IEEE, ANSI).
- Strong understanding of electrical components including breakers, transformers, relays, and control systems.
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and vendor documentation.
- Excellent organizational and communication skills.
- Experience mentoring junior staff and coordinating with multidisciplinary teams.
