Structural Project Management Lead

About the Opportunity

Our client is a growing structural engineering consulting firm that specializes in custom residential, hillside, and architect-driven projects. Operating as a fully remote team, the firm has built a strong reputation for delivering practical, thoughtful engineering solutions while maintaining a culture centered on communication, trust, accountability, and work-life balance.

As the firm continues to grow, they are seeking a senior-level engineering leader to help scale project delivery, mentor project leads, and support the development of both people and processes. This is a unique opportunity for someone who enjoys not only engineering and project management, but also coaching teams and helping build a high-performing organization.

About the Role

This position is ideal for an experienced structural engineer who has progressed beyond solely technical responsibilities and enjoys managing people, delegating effectively, and developing future leaders.

The successful candidate will oversee project execution across multiple teams, mentor project leads, provide quality oversight, and serve as a trusted operational leader for the business. While technical expertise is important, the firm places equal emphasis on communication skills, emotional intelligence, leadership ability, and a willingness to help others succeed.

This role offers significant opportunity for growth, influence, and long-term leadership within the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the delivery of multiple structural engineering projects from concept through construction.
  • Manage and mentor project leads, engineers, and designers across a remote team environment.
  • Delegate project responsibilities effectively while maintaining accountability for quality and schedule.
  • Support project managers with planning, resource allocation, staffing, and workflow management.
  • Provide coaching, performance feedback, and professional development guidance to team members.
  • Review engineering deliverables and ensure projects meet firm quality standards.
  • Identify opportunities to improve project management processes, communication, and team effectiveness.
  • Collaborate with architects, clients, contractors, and consultants throughout project delivery.
  • Support strategic growth initiatives and contribute to the development of future markets and services.
  • Help leadership expand organizational capacity by developing systems, people, and operational best practices.

What They're Looking For

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Structural Engineering, Civil Engineering, or related discipline.
  • 10+ years of structural engineering experience preferred.
  • Proven experience managing projects and leading engineering teams.
  • Strong background in custom residential, hillside construction, mixed-use, multifamily, or architect-driven projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to delegate effectively and develop junior staff.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience working directly with architects and clients.
  • Ability to independently manage project workloads while supporting the growth of others.
  • Growth-oriented mindset with a willingness to receive feedback and continuously improve.
  • SE license is a plus but not required. The firm places greater value on leadership, project management, and people development capabilities.

Ideal Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate is someone who:

  • Enjoys building teams as much as building structures.
  • Understands how to balance technical excellence with practical project delivery.
  • Can coach, mentor, and develop engineers working remotely.
  • Communicates clearly and proactively.
  • Is comfortable delegating work and empowering others.
  • Values collaboration over hierarchy.
  • Can identify organizational challenges and help create solutions.
  • Thrives in an entrepreneurial environment where initiative and trust are highly valued.

Candidates from smaller structural consulting firms often perform particularly well due to their broad project exposure and hands-on leadership experience.

Why Engineers Are Interested

  • 100% remote team with established systems and culture.
  • Strong emphasis on work-life balance with a typical 40-hour work week.
  • Opportunity to lead and mentor a growing team.
  • High level of autonomy and trust.
  • Clear path toward increased leadership responsibilities.
  • Ability to influence operations, project delivery, quality control, and future growth initiatives.
  • Diverse project portfolio including custom residential, hillside, and emerging multifamily projects.
  • Collaborative environment where communication and personal development are prioritized.
  • Opportunity to help shape the next phase of growth for an expanding engineering practice.
