Location: Remote, with up to 50% travel to client/project sites

The Opportunity

An employee-owned consulting firm specialising in the water and wastewater sector is looking for a Technology & Innovation Consultant to help utility clients improve operational performance through technology.

This position would suit someone who combines strong technical knowledge with curiosity, commercial awareness, and the ability to understand the bigger operational picture.

The successful candidate will work closely with water and wastewater utilities to understand their challenges, evaluate technology opportunities, and implement practical solutions that improve operations, strengthen cybersecurity, and enable better decision-making.

The role sits at the intersection of IT, operational technology (OT), cybersecurity, software, data, and utility operations, so the individual does not need to be a specialist in every area but should have strong technical depth in at least one relevant discipline and the ability to work across others.

Key Responsibilities

The Technology & Innovation Consultant will:

  • Work directly with utility clients to understand operational challenges and identify opportunities to improve performance through technology.
  • Assess IT and OT environments and develop recommendations around cybersecurity, reliability, system integration, and long-term support.
  • Support technology planning, cybersecurity assessments, policy development, and technology implementation.
  • Develop or integrate digital tools, applications, and data workflows that improve access to information and streamline operational processes.
  • Identify appropriate opportunities for the use of AI and data analytics, considering data security, accuracy, human oversight, and practical business value.
  • Translate technical findings into clear recommendations, roadmaps, implementation plans, and client deliverables.
  • Work across multiple technical disciplines to ensure technology solutions align with operational requirements and wider organisational objectives.
  • Contribute to project scopes, budgets, schedules, and proposals.
  • Build strong client relationships, understand additional business needs, and act as a trusted technical adviser.

Candidate Profile

The successful candidate will bring:

  • Demonstrated experience using technology to solve operational or business challenges.
  • Strong technical expertise in at least one relevant area, with the ability and willingness to work across multiple disciplines.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and an understanding of how technical decisions affect wider operational performance.
  • The ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Strong communication, facilitation, and client-facing skills.
  • An interest in emerging technologies and their practical application.
  • Good judgement around cybersecurity, data quality, confidentiality, and responsible AI use.
  • Strong attention to detail, documentation, preparation, and follow-through.
  • A bachelor's degree in a STEM discipline.

Relevant Technical Experience

Candidates may come from a variety of technical backgrounds. Relevant experience could include one or more of the following:
