Traffic Engineer (Louisville & Lexington)

Position Summary

We are seeking a Traffic Engineer to join our transportation team and support the planning, analysis, design, and implementation of roadway and traffic improvement projects throughout Kentucky. This role will be responsible for conducting traffic studies, developing traffic control plans, analyzing transportation data, and collaborating with clients and project teams to improve the safety and efficiency of transportation systems.

Responsibilities

  • Perform traffic engineering studies, including traffic impact studies, signal warrant analyses, intersection capacity analyses, and safety evaluations.
  • Analyze traffic operations using industry-standard software such as Synchro, SimTraffic, HCS, VISSIM, and MicroStation/OpenRoads.
  • Develop traffic signal designs, timing plans, and traffic control plans for construction and maintenance projects.
  • Prepare roadway signing, pavement marking, and temporary traffic control designs in accordance with state and federal standards.
  • Assist with transportation planning studies, corridor analyses, and multimodal transportation projects.
  • Collect, review, and interpret traffic data, including traffic counts, crash data, and roadway performance metrics.
  • Coordinate with state and local agencies, utility companies, contractors, and project stakeholders.
  • Prepare technical reports, plans, specifications, and cost estimates.
  • Support project managers with scheduling, budgeting, and client communications.
  • Participate in public meetings and presentations related to transportation projects.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable DOT, MUTCD, and AASHTO standards and guidelines.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related field.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or ability to obtain licensure within a reasonable timeframe.
  • 3+ years of traffic engineering or transportation engineering experience preferred.
  • Experience with traffic analysis and design software.
  • Working knowledge of MUTCD, AASHTO, and transportation engineering principles.
  • Strong technical writing, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
  • Experience working on state DOT, municipal, or county transportation projects is preferred.

Preferred Skills

  • Traffic signal design and timing experience.
  • Traffic impact and safety study experience.
  • Knowledge of Kentucky transportation regulations and permitting processes.
  • Familiarity with MicroStation, OpenRoads Designer, AutoCAD Civil 3D, and GIS applications.
  • Experience with transportation planning, complete streets, and multimodal design concepts.
