Transmission Planning Engineer
Overview
A growing engineering consulting organization is seeking a Utility Planning Engineer to support electric utility clients with distribution system planning and analysis projects across North America.
This role is well-suited for early-career engineers who have begun building experience within the electric utility, power delivery, or engineering consulting industries. The successful candidate will support technical studies that help utilities evaluate system performance, identify infrastructure needs, and plan for future growth.
Engineers in this position will work alongside experienced planning, transmission, and substation professionals while receiving mentorship and opportunities for long-term career development.
Responsibilities
- Perform electric distribution system studies and analyses to support utility planning initiatives.
- Develop and maintain system models used for load flow, fault current, reliability, and operational assessments.
- Evaluate proposed system upgrades and provide technical recommendations based on study results.
- Support distributed generation and energy storage interconnection reviews.
- Prepare technical reports, calculations, presentations, and supporting project documentation.
- Coordinate with engineering teams, utility representatives, and project stakeholders throughout project execution.
- Assist with project planning, scheduling, and delivery activities.
- Review engineering data and ensure work products meet quality and technical standards.
- Support field data collection and site visits as required.
- Participate in client meetings and technical discussions.
- Occasional travel may be required.
Required Qualifications
- Approximately 1+ years of relevant experience in electric utilities, power systems consulting, utility planning, distribution engineering, or a related field. Candidates with 2+ years of industry experience are strongly preferred.
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
- Understanding of power systems fundamentals, including load flow analysis, fault current calculations, power factor, and per-unit systems.
- Experience using power system analysis or utility modeling software such as CYME, Synergi, Milsoft, PowerWorld, ASPEN, PSS®E, or comparable platforms.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and standard office software applications.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification, or ability to obtain within a reasonable timeframe following hire.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting utility, cooperative, municipal, developer, or engineering consulting projects.
- Exposure to distribution planning, system impact studies, interconnection studies, or grid modernization initiatives.
- Experience with Python, VBA, MATLAB, or similar programming and scripting tools.
