Travel Technician
Overview
A growing power systems services provider is seeking an experienced Electrical Relay Testing Technician to support ongoing substation and power generation projects. This role is ideal for a self‑driven technician with strong expertise in protective relay testing, maintenance, and commissioning. The position involves hands-on fieldwork and participation in the full lifecycle of system upgrades-from initial assessment through final energization.
Key Responsibilities
Protective Relay & Substation Work
Conduct assessments and lead retrofit design and implementation for medium‑ and high‑voltage substations and power generation facilities.
Develop protective settings, perform relay testing, and support commissioning activities.
Create detailed commissioning documents and perform on-site field commissioning.
Testing, Maintenance & Troubleshooting
Perform maintenance and functional testing on protective relays and associated high‑voltage equipment.
Diagnose and repair relay issues and related control system equipment.
Execute testing procedures for instrument transformers, metering, controls, and protection systems.
Project Support
Contribute to the development and execution of commissioning plans.
Prepare accurate as-built documentation using AutoCAD.
Ensure all work complies with safety standards, regulatory requirements, and internal procedures.
Required Skills & Technical Competencies
Strong working knowledge of power generation and transmission systems, including transformer circuits, metering, controls, relay logic, excitation systems, and G&T protective principles.
Experience with instrumentation and process control systems (pressure, flow, temperature) and commissioning HART-based transmitters.
Familiarity with PLC fundamentals, wiring, and troubleshooting (preferred).
Understanding of 480V motor control systems.
Prior experience installing and commissioning equipment in substations or power plants.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and basic AutoCAD use.
Experience with relay testing platforms, hardware, and software.
Education & Experience
High school diploma required.
Minimum of 5 years of recent experience in electrical testing, commissioning, or installation.
Work Environment & Travel
This is a remote, field-based role with extensive travel required (approximately 75%, increasing during spring and fall outage seasons).
Candidates should live within one hour of a major commercial airport.
