Utilities Design Manager | NYC, NY
Position Summary
The Utility Design Manager leads utility coordination, relocation planning, and design efforts for major transportation infrastructure projects valued at $250M+ with utility relocation budgets exceeding $50M. This role oversees utility consultants, manages stakeholder coordination, and drives utility conflict resolution throughout design and construction.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage utility design consultants and deliverables.
- Coordinate with utility owners, contractors, and project teams to resolve utility-related issues.
- Support procurement and oversight of utility engineering services.
- Facilitate utility meetings and track agreements, design decisions, and action items.
- Develop and maintain utility inventories, stakeholder contact lists, and conflict matrices.
- Identify existing and potential utility conflicts and recommend mitigation strategies.
- Coordinate with roadway, bridge, drainage, and other design disciplines to minimize utility impacts.
- Manage additional SUE investigations as needed.
- Oversee development of preliminary utility relocation plans and concepts.
- Evaluate relocation alternatives for constructability, schedule, and cost effectiveness.
- Coordinate utility adjustments with overall project design and right-of-way constraints.
- Support easement and right-of-way coordination efforts.
- Develop and review utility relocation cost estimates and budgets.
- Prepare and maintain utility relocation schedules aligned with project milestones.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, MEP Engineering, or a related field.
- Experience supporting highway or transportation design and construction projects.
- Minimum 5 years of utility coordination or utility management experience on Design-Build or P3 projects.
- Knowledge of utility relocation processes, conflict analysis, and utility stakeholder coordination.
- Proficiency with MicroStation and utility planning tools preferred.
