About the Company
A growing commercial contractor is building out its new construction roofing division in New York City. With an established presence across the construction sector, the firm is now investing in expanding its capabilities within ground-up roofing and building envelope systems.
This is a high-impact hire, playing a key role in winning work across large-scale developments, high-rise buildings, and complex urban projects.
The Role
The Estimator will be responsible for preparing accurate and competitive bids for commercial roofing projects across NYC, with a focus on ground-up construction.
This role is heavily front-end and requires strong experience interpreting drawings, working with GCs, and pricing projects within the constraints of the NYC market - including union labor, logistics, and aggressive schedules.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare detailed cost estimates for commercial new construction roofing projects
- Analyze drawings, specs, and bid documents for full roofing scope
- Perform quantity take-offs and pricing for:
- TPO / PVC / EPDM systems
- Modified bitumen (SBS) and built-up roofing
- Insulation, waterproofing layers, and accessories
- Solicit and evaluate pricing from suppliers and subcontractors
- Build competitive bids aligned with NYC labor and material costs
- Coordinate with preconstruction teams, project managers, and GCs
- Identify value engineering opportunities to improve bid competitiveness
- Assist in bid presentations and scope clarifications
NYC Market Focus (Key Differentiator)
Success in this role requires experience estimating within the unique NYC construction environment, including:
- Union labor pricing and productivity considerations
- Tight site logistics and delivery constraints
- Coordination with façade, structural, and waterproofing trades
- Navigating DOB requirements and documentation standards
- Working on large, multi-trade ground-up projects
Requirements
- 3-8+ years of commercial roofing estimating experience
- Strong focus on new construction (not just service or re-roofing)
- Proficiency in reading construction drawings and specifications
- Hands-on experience pricing major roofing systems (TPO, PVC, EPDM, SBS)
- Proven experience bidding work in NYC or similar urban markets
- Strong understanding of labor, materials, and production rates
- Ability to manage multiple bids and deadlines
Preferred
- Experience working for a commercial roofing contractor (not manufacturer or consultant)
- Familiarity with large-scale projects (mixed-use, high-rise, institutional)
- Experience collaborating directly with general contractors and developers
- Knowledge of building envelope systems beyond roofing
