Data Center Construction Project Engineer

Our client is a leading Owner's Representative and Project Management consultancy specializing exclusively in mission‑critical and data center construction. With decades of experience delivering some of the most complex projects in the industry, they are known for solving hard problems, maintaining rigorous safety and quality standards, and delivering projects on time and on budget in high‑intensity environments.

This is a high‑performance team that values accountability, ownership, and creative problem‑solving-and is seeking a Project Engineer to support the execution of large‑scale data center construction projects across the U.S.

Role Summary

The Project Engineer (PE) supports the day‑to‑day execution of mission‑critical data center construction by driving documentation, coordination, procurement tracking, and field communication. This role is central to keeping projects moving-managing submittals and RFIs, supporting schedule and cost controls, coordinating owner‑furnished equipment (OFCI), and helping push quality, commissioning readiness, and turnover.

The PE works closely with the Project Manager, Superintendents, subcontractors, vendors, design partners, commissioning agents, and client teams to ensure work is coordinated, decisions are documented, and the field has what it needs to build safely and correctly.

Typical Project Types

  • Ground‑up hyperscale and enterprise data center builds
  • Retrofits and upgrades to live / operating facilities (brownfield)
  • Expansions of existing data centers and critical infrastructure
  • Large tenant improvements, fit‑outs, and deployment‑driven retrofits

Key Responsibilities

Submittals, RFIs & Document Control (Primary)

  • Lead submittal and RFI processes end‑to‑end: logging, tracking, routing, follow‑up, and closeout
  • Ensure alignment with drawings, specifications, basis of design, and approved alternates
  • Maintain clean, current project documentation (logs, meeting minutes, sketches, bulletins)
  • Support drawing management and revision control to prevent field errors

Procurement & Owner‑Furnished Equipment (OFCI) (Primary)

  • Track long‑lead equipment procurement and surface risks early
  • Support OFCI coordination: delivery timing, receiving, storage, and installation readiness
  • Coordinate vendor logistics, delivery windows, and laydown requirements

Field Coordination & Schedule Support (Primary)

  • Support weekly coordination cycles (subcontractor coordination, BIM/VDC, OAC meetings)
  • Track commitments and action items across teams
  • Assist with identifying schedule impacts tied to procurement, design, or field constraints

Quality Support (Primary)

  • Support site QA/QC processes, inspections, deficiency tracking, and closeout
  • Assist with jobsite photo documentation and testing records
  • Help drive clean‑build standards consistent with data center environments

Cost, Change & Billing Support (Supporting)

  • Support change management documentation, pricing requests, and scope narratives
  • Assist with pay application tracking, invoices, and cost backup organization

Commissioning Readiness & Turnover (Primary/Supporting)

  • Track commissioning prerequisites and installation closeout
  • Support turnover documentation including O&M manuals, as‑builts, test results, warranties, and spares
  • Assist with building complete, audit‑ready turnover packages

Safety & Site Standards (Supporting)

  • Reinforce jobsite safety expectations and hazard reporting
  • Support site health, safety, and security protocols

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Strong written and verbal communication with clear follow‑through
  • Highly organized; comfortable managing logs, tracking, and closure
  • Working knowledge of construction drawings, specs, RFIs, submittals, and change documentation
  • Familiarity with mission‑critical environments preferred
  • Comfortable coordinating across multiple stakeholders under schedule pressure
  • Working knowledge of CPM schedules and milestone tracking preferred
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office; experience with Procore, Autodesk/ACC, Bluebeam, P6 a plus
  • Self‑starter with a "get it done" mindset and team‑first attitude

Experience & Education

  • 2-6+ years in Project Engineer, Project Coordinator, or Assistant PM roles
  • Mission‑critical or data center experience strongly preferred
  • Degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • OSHA 10/30 preferred (or willingness to obtain)
