Project Manager - Electrical Construction (Large-Scale Commercial & Institutional Projects)
Overview
The Project Manager is responsible for leading complex, large-scale electrical construction projects across commercial, institutional, healthcare, transportation, and mission-critical environments. This role oversees all phases of project execution, from preconstruction through commissioning, ensuring delivery aligns with strict safety, quality, and performance standards typical of high-profile, highly regulated builds.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee full lifecycle management of electrical construction projects, including high-rise developments, hospitals, transportation systems, data centers, and other mission-critical facilities
- Lead preconstruction efforts including estimating support, scope development, value engineering, procurement strategy, and scheduling
- Manage multiple concurrent projects with significant budgets, technical complexity, and aggressive timelines
- Coordinate closely with general contractors, engineers, architects, and specialized subcontractors on large, multi-trade job sites
- Develop and maintain detailed project schedules, cost forecasts, and staffing plans for labor-intensive electrical installations
- Drive procurement and logistics planning for major equipment such as switchgear, panels, generators, and low/medium voltage distribution systems
- Ensure strict adherence to safety programs, jobsite compliance standards, and regulatory requirements, particularly in occupied or high-risk environments (e.g., healthcare or transit systems)
- Monitor and control project financial performance, including labor productivity, material costs, change orders, and contract deliverables
- Support field operations by resolving design conflicts, constructability challenges, and installation sequencing issues
- Lead coordination of BIM/VDC efforts where applicable to support clash detection and efficient installation
- Maintain strong client and stakeholder relationships across long-duration, high-visibility projects
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or related field (or equivalent industry experience)
- 5-10+ years of experience managing large-scale electrical construction projects
- Proven experience in complex environments such as healthcare facilities, transportation infrastructure, commercial high-rises, or data centers
- Strong working knowledge of power distribution systems, lighting controls, fire alarm, and low-voltage systems
- Demonstrated success managing projects with significant labor forces and tight coordination requirements
- Experience with project financial management, contract administration, and change management
Preferred Skills
- Familiarity with union labor environments and large, multi-phase construction projects
- Experience with mission-critical systems requiring high reliability (backup power, redundancy, commissioning)
- Knowledge of BIM coordination tools and advanced scheduling practices
- OSHA certification and deep understanding of jobsite safety culture
- PMP or equivalent certification
Work Environment
- Hybrid work environment with significant time spent on active construction sites
- Requires ability to operate in fast-paced, high-pressure project settings
- Regular coordination meetings with diverse stakeholders across trades and disciplines
