Position Overview
We are seeking an Assistant Civil Engineer to support municipal transportation and public works projects throughout California. This position is ideal for an early-to-mid-career civil engineer who has experience working with cities, counties, public agencies, or engineering consultants supporting local agency projects.
The engineer will assist with the planning, design, review, and delivery of transportation and infrastructure improvements, working alongside senior engineers, project managers, municipal staff, consultants, contractors, and other stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the planning and design of municipal transportation and public works projects, including roadway, intersection, pedestrian, bicycle, traffic, and streetscape improvements.
- Prepare and review engineering plans, specifications, cost estimates, technical reports, and calculations.
- Assist with roadway rehabilitation, pavement, drainage, sidewalk, ADA, signing, striping, and traffic-related improvements.
- Perform engineering analysis and assist with transportation and traffic studies.
- Review improvement plans and construction documents for compliance with applicable municipal and agency standards.
- Coordinate with cities, counties, utilities, consultants, developers, and contractors as required.
- Support permitting, plan review, construction administration, and project documentation.
- Conduct field investigations and site visits to evaluate existing conditions and support design recommendations.
- Assist Project Managers with project schedules, budgets, deliverables, and client coordination.
- Prepare technical correspondence, staff reports, presentations, and other engineering documentation.
- Respond to technical questions from agency staff, contractors, developers, and the public as appropriate.
These responsibilities align well with California municipal Assistant Civil Engineer roles, which commonly include public works design, plan review, cost estimates, field investigations, traffic-related analysis, permitting, and construction support.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering, or a related field.
- Approximately 0-3+ years of relevant civil engineering experience preferred.
- Experience or willingness to support municipal, public works, roadway, or transportation projects in California.
- Familiarity or willingness with California local agency standards and transportation/public works project delivery.
- Experience or willingness to prepare / review engineering plans, specifications, calculations, reports, and cost estimates.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to coordinate effectively with clients, agencies, consultants, contractors, and multidisciplinary project teams.
Preferred Qualifications
- EIT certification in California.
- California Professional Engineer (PE) license or progress toward licensure.
- Experience working directly with California cities, counties, or Caltrans.
- Experience with Auto-CAD, Civil 3D, MicroStation, or similar engineering/design software.
- Exposure to traffic engineering, roadway design, signing and striping, traffic control, ADA improvements, or active transportation.
- Previous experience within a consulting environment providing staff augmentation or municipal engineering services.
