About the Opportunity

We are seeking a highly capable Controller to take ownership of the financial operations of a growing mechanical contractor. This is not a traditional corporate accounting role. We're looking for a construction accounting professional who understands the unique financial challenges of project-based contracting and can provide real visibility into project performance, profitability, and cash flow.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in mechanical, HVAC, plumbing, or specialty subcontractor construction accounting and be comfortable working hands-on within a business undergoing operational and financial improvement initiatives.

Whether you are an experienced Controller or a high-performing Construction Accounting Manager or Assistant Controller ready to step into a leadership role, we want to hear from you.

Key Responsibilities

Construction Accounting & Financial Oversight

  • Manage WIP (Work in Progress) reporting and percentage-of-completion accounting
  • Oversee job costing and cost-to-complete forecasting
  • Develop and maintain 13-week cash flow forecasts
  • Lead monthly financial reporting, forecasting, and analysis
  • Manage AR/AP functions, collections, and cash management
  • Administer AIA billing, retainage tracking, and over/under billings

Project Financial Analysis

  • Partner closely with Project Managers to reconcile budgets and forecast project margins
  • Review active and completed projects to identify profit erosion and margin leakage
  • Analyze labour productivity and project cost performance
  • Identify missed or unbilled change orders, recoverable costs, backcharges, and other revenue opportunities
  • Provide actionable insights into where projects are making or losing money

Process Improvement & Controls

  • Strengthen financial controls, reporting processes, and operational visibility
  • Implement improved project reporting tools and early warning indicators
  • Assist with accounting and project management system enhancements and implementations
  • Perform forensic accounting and financial reconstruction where needed
  • Support relationships with external CPA firms, banking partners, and surety providers

What We're Looking For

  • Strong accounting experience within the construction industry
  • Experience working for a mechanical, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, or specialty subcontractor preferred
  • Deep understanding of:
    • WIP reporting
    • Percentage-of-completion accounting
    • Job costing
    • Construction forecasting
    • Cash flow management
    • AIA billing and retainage
  • Ability to analyse project financial performance and communicate findings to operational leadership
  • Hands-on, detail-oriented approach with a willingness to dig into project-level data
  • Experience helping businesses improve reporting, accountability, and profitability
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field preferred
  • CPA is a plus but not required

Why Join?

  • 3+ days working from home a week
  • Opportunity to make a significant impact within the business
  • Direct exposure to senior leadership and operational decision-making
  • Play a critical role in improving profitability and financial performance
  • Help shape financial systems, reporting processes, and operational controls
  • Strong compensation package with flexibility for exceptional candidates

Ideal Candidate Profile

This role is best suited for someone who truly understands construction accounting and enjoys working closely with operations. We're looking for a professional who can not only explain what happened financially, but also help the business understand why it happened and how to prevent it from happening again. If you're comfortable rolling up your sleeves, analysing project performance, and driving meaningful improvements, this is an excellent opportunity to make a lasting impact.
