Role Overview
A well-established and highly respected heavy civil contractor is seeking a Head of Construction to lead and scale its field operations across a growing portfolio of sitework, structural, and infrastructure projects.
This is a senior leadership role responsible for overseeing construction execution across multiple project teams, driving operational performance, and ensuring that projects are delivered safely, efficiently, and profitably. The role will work closely with executive leadership while directly influencing field culture, team development, and long-term operational strategy.
The ideal candidate brings deep experience in heavy civil construction, a strong leadership presence, and a track record of building and managing high-performing teams across complex, fast-moving projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide overall leadership and direction for all construction operations across active projects
- Oversee Superintendents and field leadership, ensuring alignment on execution, safety, and quality
- Drive consistency in field operations, project delivery standards, and performance expectations
- Partner with Project Management teams to ensure alignment between field execution and financial performance
- Establish and reinforce best practices for scheduling, planning, sequencing, and production tracking
- Lead workforce planning, staffing strategy, and development of field personnel
- Monitor project performance across schedule, cost, and productivity metrics and take corrective action as needed
- Champion safety initiatives and ensure compliance with all regulatory and company standards
- Support preconstruction and estimating teams with input on means, methods, and constructability
- Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, subcontractors, and industry partners
- Play a key role in strategic planning, growth initiatives, and operational improvements
Ideal Background
- 15+ years of progressive experience in heavy civil construction
- Career progression through field leadership roles (Superintendent, Senior Superintendent, or similar) into broader operational responsibility
- Strong background in sitework, excavation, structural, bridge, or civil infrastructure projects
- Proven ability to manage multiple project teams and field leaders simultaneously
- Demonstrated success improving operational efficiency, productivity, and project outcomes
- Strong leadership presence with the ability to influence, mentor, and develop teams
Technical & Operational Expertise
- Deep understanding of construction means, methods, and sequencing in heavy civil environments
- Experience with large-scale earthwork, structures, utility work, or bridge-related scopes
- Strong working knowledge of scheduling, production tracking, and project controls
- Comfortable analyzing field performance data and translating it into operational improvements
- Strong familiarity with safety standards, regulatory requirements, and risk management
