Head of Construction

About the Opportunity

A well-established mechanical contractor with a long-standing reputation for delivering complex commercial, industrial, and institutional projects is seeking a Head of Construction to lead its Project Delivery organization.

This executive leadership role is responsible for driving operational excellence across all construction projects, ensuring work is delivered safely, profitably, on schedule, and to the highest quality standards. The successful candidate will provide strategic leadership to Project Managers, Assistant Project Managers, Project Engineers, BIM/VDC professionals, and other project support personnel while collaborating closely with executive leadership, operations, preconstruction, accounting, and field teams.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Team Development

• Lead, mentor, and develop the Project Delivery team.
• Conduct regular performance reviews, coaching sessions, and career development discussions.
• Establish clear expectations, accountability measures, and performance standards.
• Promote a culture of collaboration, professionalism, and continuous improvement.
• Support recruiting, hiring, onboarding, workforce planning, and succession planning initiatives.

Project Delivery Oversight

• Oversee the successful execution of projects from turnover through closeout.
• Monitor project performance related to schedule, budget, labor productivity, safety, quality, and client satisfaction.
• Ensure project teams proactively identify and address risks, challenges, and opportunities.
• Review project status reports and implement corrective actions when necessary.
• Assist teams in managing relationships with clients, subcontractors, and vendors.
• Ensure project documentation is maintained accurately and consistently.

Operational Excellence

• Develop and implement standardized project management processes and best practices.
• Drive consistency in planning, execution, communication, and reporting.
• Evaluate workflows and identify opportunities for increased efficiency and performance.
• Partner with executive leadership to establish departmental goals, KPIs, and strategic initiatives.
• Utilize data and reporting to improve project outcomes and decision-making.

Financial Management

• Monitor financial performance across the project portfolio.
• Review forecasts, productivity trends, cost projections, and profitability metrics.
• Support project teams in developing recovery plans for underperforming projects.
• Collaborate with accounting and operations teams to ensure accurate financial reporting.
• Drive accountability for maintaining and improving project margins.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

• Partner with Preconstruction teams to ensure successful project turnover and scope alignment.
• Collaborate with Operations and Field Leadership on manpower planning and resource allocation.
• Work closely with BIM/VDC teams to support project coordination and execution.
• Support business development efforts through client relationship management and growth initiatives.
• Serve as a key link between executive leadership and project delivery teams.

Risk Management

• Ensure contractual obligations are properly understood and managed.
• Assist project teams with change management, dispute resolution, and claim avoidance.
• Monitor project risk exposure and implement mitigation strategies.
• Support compliance with contractual, legal, and safety requirements.

Minimum Qualifications

• Minimum 10 years of construction project management experience.
• Minimum 5 years of leadership experience managing project management teams.
• Proven success overseeing multiple large-scale construction projects simultaneously.
• Strong leadership, mentoring, and coaching abilities.
• Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
• Advanced understanding of project financial management.
• Strong knowledge of contracts, project controls, scheduling, and risk management.
• Ability to analyze operational data and drive continuous improvement initiatives.
• Strong decision-making and conflict-resolution skills.
• Proficiency with project management software and Microsoft Office.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Business, or a related field.
• Experience within commercial mechanical, HVAC, plumbing, or industrial construction environments.
