IT Infrastructure Design Engineer

Position Summary

A nationally recognized technology consulting and engineering firm is seeking a Mid-Level IT Infrastructure Design Engineer to join its growing team. This role is ideal for a technology infrastructure professional with experience designing telecommunications and structured cabling systems for complex building projects.

The IT Infrastructure Design Engineer will collaborate with clients, architects, engineers, contractors, and project stakeholders to develop scalable, reliable, and future-ready technology infrastructure solutions. The position offers involvement throughout the project lifecycle, from programming and design through construction administration and project closeout.


Key Responsibilities

Telecommunications & Infrastructure Design

  • Design structured cabling and telecommunications infrastructure systems for new construction and renovation projects.
  • Develop solutions for:
    • Copper and fiber optic cabling systems
    • Entrance facilities
    • MDF and IDF rooms
    • Telecommunications pathways and spaces
    • Backbone and horizontal cabling systems
    • Wireless infrastructure support
    • Outside plant (OSP) infrastructure
    • Data center and mission-critical environments
  • Prepare basis-of-design reports and technical narratives.
  • Support technology master planning and infrastructure standardization efforts.

Design Documentation

  • Produce construction documents including:
    • Telecommunications floor plans
    • Pathway drawings
    • Equipment room layouts
    • Riser diagrams
    • Rack elevations
    • Fiber and copper infrastructure details
    • Telecommunications schedules and specifications
  • Perform capacity planning and infrastructure calculations.
  • Prepare bid documents, technical specifications, and project deliverables.

Project Coordination

  • Coordinate with architectural, electrical, mechanical, structural, and technology design teams.
  • Participate in client meetings, programming sessions, and project workshops.
  • Assist clients in defining current and future technology infrastructure requirements.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams throughout all phases of project delivery.

Construction Administration

  • Review contractor submittals, RFIs, shop drawings, and as-built documentation.
  • Conduct field observations and construction site visits.
  • Verify installation compliance with project documents, specifications, and industry standards.
  • Assist with testing review, punch list activities, and project closeout.

Technical Consulting

  • Apply industry standards and best practices to telecommunications infrastructure designs.
  • Stay current with emerging technologies, structured cabling standards, wireless infrastructure, and digital building initiatives.
  • Assist senior engineers and project managers with technology consulting assignments.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Telecommunications, Information Technology, Technology Systems, Construction Management, or a related field, or equivalent industry experience.
  • Approximately 4-8 years of experience in ICT, telecommunications, structured cabling, low-voltage consulting, or technology infrastructure design.
  • Experience designing structured cabling and telecommunications systems within commercial building environments.
  • Understanding of industry standards, telecommunications infrastructure design principles, and construction documentation practices.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced consulting environment.

  • AutoCAD
  • Revit
  • Bluebeam Revu
  • Microsoft Office Suite
  • BIM coordination and multidisciplinary design environments
  • Experience preparing construction drawings, specifications, and technical documentation

Preferred Qualifications

  • RCDD certification or active pursuit of certification.
  • Experience within a consulting engineering, ICT consulting, or technology design environment.
  • Exposure to healthcare, higher education, corporate workplace, data center, mission-critical, government, or campus projects.
  • Knowledge of:
    • TIA standards
    • BICSI design methodology
    • Fiber optic infrastructure
    • Wireless network infrastructure
    • Data center design principles
    • Smart building technologies
  • Experience coordinating directly with owners, architects, and contractors.
