Lead Electrical Engineer - Power Generation
Role Overview
An energy infrastructure organization is seeking a Lead Electrical Engineer to provide subject matter expertise in the planning, design, implementation, and support of electrical systems for large‑scale industrial and energy projects. These projects may include pipeline systems, facility expansions, and advanced energy infrastructure such as hydrogen, ammonia, electrolysis, and carbon capture facilities.
This role requires a senior‑level engineer with the ability to lead electrical design efforts from concept through execution while providing technical leadership, owner's engineering support, and mentorship to less experienced engineers.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead electrical system design from conceptual development through detailed design, ensuring alignment with project scope, schedule, and budget
- Review and approve electrical equipment specifications, datasheets, RFQs, technical bid evaluations, and purchase recommendations
- Review vendor drawings and coordinate technical interfaces with suppliers, designers, and other engineering disciplines
- Participate in and lead project planning activities, including scheduling, staffing, budgeting, construction planning, and change management
- Apply expert knowledge of electrical engineering principles, codes, standards, and best practices to solve complex, non‑standard design challenges
- Lead construction administration activities, including:
- Field coordination
- Design clarifications
- Electrical calculations
- Inspections, testing, and system validation
- Ensure installation, inspections, and testing activities meet internal engineering and safety standards
- Develop cost proposals, qualification statements, budgets, and project cost estimates
- Track and report project financial performance
- Interface across engineering disciplines to ensure proper integration of electrical systems into overall project design
- Review projects for compliance with safety regulations (including OSHA), engineering standards, construction standards, and operational requirements
- Specify major electrical equipment, including:
- Medium‑ and low‑voltage switchgear
- Motor control centers
- Transformers
- VFDs and soft starters
- UPS, DC systems, and protection schemes
- Provide owner's engineering support, including vendor evaluations, document reviews, and factory acceptance testing
- Develop and maintain internal electrical equipment specifications and engineering standards
- Balance workload across multiple concurrent projects and priorities
- Provide leadership, technical guidance, and mentorship to junior and mid‑level engineers
- Ensure adherence to QA/QC processes and engineering best practices
- Support field operations and project needs, including non‑traditional work hours when required
Required Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution
Experience
- 10+ years of experience designing electrical systems for large‑scale industrial or energy facilities
- Proven experience leading electrical scope on multidisciplinary projects
Technical Expertise
- Strong knowledge of electrical power generation and distribution systems
- Experience designing electrical systems for compressor stations, pump stations, processing plants, or similar facilities
- Medium‑ and high‑voltage equipment specification, sizing, and system integration
- Ability to read and interpret electrical one‑lines, three‑lines, schematics, and P&IDs
- In‑depth knowledge of applicable codes and standards (e.g., NEC, IEEE, IEC, API, ISA)
Additional Requirements
- Proficiency with standard engineering office tools (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook)
- Valid driver's license and ability to travel as required
Preferred (Not Required) Experience
- Experience with hydrogen, ammonia, syngas, GTL, or similar advanced energy facilities
- Proficiency with power system analysis software (e.g., ETAP) for:
- Load flow studies
- Motor starting studies
- One‑line development
- Experience performing arc flash studies and relay coordination (e.g., SKM, ETAP)
- Background in electrical systems supporting rotating equipment such as motors, turbines, engines, and pumps
- Advanced use of technical and project documentation tools
