Mechanical Design Engineer

A well-established multidisciplinary engineering consulting firm is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to join its growing team in Raleigh, North Carolina. This individual will contribute to the design and development of mechanical building systems for a diverse portfolio of projects across healthcare, education, commercial, institutional, science & technology, and public sector markets.

This opportunity is ideal for an engineer who enjoys collaborating with clients and project teams, solving complex design challenges, and supporting projects from concept through construction.

Responsibilities

  • Design HVAC and mechanical building systems for a variety of building types.
  • Prepare engineering calculations, construction documents, specifications, and technical reports.
  • Perform heating and cooling load calculations, equipment selection, and system sizing.
  • Develop ductwork, piping, ventilation, and temperature control system layouts.
  • Coordinate with architectural, structural, electrical, and plumbing disciplines throughout the design process.
  • Utilize Revit, AutoCAD, and related design software to prepare project documentation.
  • Participate in project meetings and coordinate directly with clients, owners, and stakeholders.
  • Conduct field investigations, site visits, and existing conditions assessments.
  • Support construction administration activities, including submittal reviews, RFI responses, and field observations.
  • Ensure designs comply with applicable building codes, industry standards, and project requirements.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • 3+ years of experience in mechanical design within an MEP consulting, engineering, or architecture/engineering environment.
  • Experience designing HVAC systems for commercial, healthcare, educational, institutional, laboratory, or similar project types.
  • Proficiency with Revit, AutoCAD, and industry-standard engineering software.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical building systems, codes, and design standards.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • EIT certification or progression toward Professional Engineer (PE) licensure.
  • Experience with sustainable design initiatives and energy-efficient building systems.
  • Familiarity with ASHRAE standards and applicable mechanical codes.
  • Exposure to healthcare, laboratory, higher education, mission-critical, or government projects.
