Position Opening: Power Systems Engineer - EMT Simulation Focus
A leading energy consultancy is seeking a skilled Power Systems Engineer to join its team specializing in renewable energy and grid modernization. This role involves delivering innovative, cost-effective solutions for stakeholders across power generation, transmission, and distribution sectors. About the Role
This position supports clients in navigating the transition to low-carbon, digitally enabled energy systems. The engineer will conduct advanced Electro-Magnetic Transient (EMT) studies and contribute to the development of robust, reliable power infrastructure. Responsibilities include:
- Performing EMT simulations such as:
- Sub-synchronous resonance (SSR)
- Sub-synchronous control interaction (SSCI)
- Ferro-resonance, transient overvoltage (TOV), sustained overvoltage (SOV), transient recovery voltage (TRV), and harmonic analysis
- Inrush current and insulation coordination studies
- Developing and validating PSCAD/EMTP-RV models, including benchmarking against PSSE
- Modeling inverter-based resources (IBRs) like wind, solar, and battery systems
- Preparing technical reports and client presentations
- Ensuring timely, high-quality project delivery
- Staying current with industry standards (IEEE, NERC, CIGRE)
- Automating simulation workflows using Python, MATLAB, or similar tools
- Supporting internal R&D and tool development
- (Optional) Contributing to data center modeling efforts
Candidate Profile
Ideal candidates will have:
- A Master's or PhD in electrical engineering with a focus on power systems and control
- Hands-on experience with PSCAD or EMTP-RV
- Familiarity with power electronics and IBR control systems
- Strong foundation in:
- Power system fundamentals
- Renewable integration
- System stability (small- and large-signal)
- Transient and dynamic analysis
- Proficiency in scripting languages for simulation automation
- Excellent communication and technical writing skills
- Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented, client-facing environment
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional engineering license (PE in the US or P.Eng in Canada)
- Doctoral research in power system transients
- Experience with SSR and transient analysis
- Knowledge of additional simulation platforms (e.g., PSS/E, PowerFactory, TSAT, ASPEN)
- Familiarity with ISO/RTO interconnection processes (e.g., ERCOT, PJM, MISO)
Compensation and Benefits
- Salary range:
- USD: $80,000-$140,000
- CAD: $90,000-$150,000
