Principal Consultant, Site Investigation & Remediation

California | Sacramento, San Jose, Walnut Creek, or Central Valley
Remote | $175,000-$200,000 Base + Bonus + Stock Ownership

A mid-sized, privately held and employee-owned environmental consulting firm is seeking a Principal Consultant to help lead and co-direct its Environmental Services Group across California.

This is a senior leadership opportunity for an experienced environmental professional who wants to remain connected to technically complex site investigation and remediation work while playing a significant role in the strategic growth and direction of a statewide practice.

The position can be primarily remote, with a preference for candidates located near the firm's offices in Sacramento, San Jose, Walnut Creek, or the Central Valley.

The Role

As a Principal Consultant, you will:

  • Co-direct the firm's California Environmental Services Group, helping shape technical strategy, growth, and overall direction of the practice.
  • Provide senior technical leadership on complex site investigation, remediation, and environmental cleanup projects throughout California.
  • Serve as a trusted technical advisor to clients and internal project teams, providing senior-level review, guidance, and problem-solving.
  • Support and mentor project managers, engineers, geologists, and other environmental professionals across the California practice.
  • Help strengthen existing client relationships while identifying opportunities to expand the firm's environmental services.
  • Collaborate with other senior leaders on staffing, project delivery, business development, and long-term growth initiatives.
  • Remain involved in high-level project work without being tied to a traditional full-time field or office schedule.

Ideal Background

  • 15+ years of environmental consulting experience, ideally within the California market.
  • Licensed Professional Geologist (PG) or Professional Engineer/Civil Engineer (PE) in California.
  • Strong technical background in site investigation and remediation.
  • Experience overseeing complex environmental projects and multidisciplinary technical teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and develop staff while providing senior-level technical oversight.
  • Strong client relationships and familiarity with the regulatory environment surrounding environmental investigation and remediation in California.
  • Previous practice, group, or regional leadership experience is highly preferred.

Why Consider the Opportunity?

  • $175,000-$200,000 base salary, plus annual bonus potential.
  • Stock ownership through a privately held, employee-owned firm.
  • Opportunity to co-lead an entire California environmental services practice rather than simply manage an individual office or project portfolio.
  • Remote flexibility with access to established offices throughout Northern and Central California.
  • Significant influence over technical direction, team development, hiring, client strategy, and future growth.
  • Mid-sized environment offering the resources and project portfolio of an established consulting firm without the layers of a large corporate organization.
  • Long-term opportunity to have a meaningful financial stake in the company's continued growth.
