Senior Electrical Engineer - Data Hall Systems
Senior Electrical Engineer - Data Hall Systems
Location: Dallas, TX
Industry: Data Centers | Mission Critical | HPC / AI Infrastructure
Level: Senior Individual Contributor | Owner's Engineering
The Opportunity
A rapidly growing technology infrastructure company is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer - Data Hall Systems to join its Owner's Engineering team in Dallas.
This is a highly technical, owner-side position supporting the design, construction, and commissioning of large-scale data center and high-performance computing infrastructure. The electrical scope extends from the utility and generation interface through MV/LV switchgear, multi-MW UPS systems, BESS, busway, and rack-level distribution.
Working alongside EPC contractors, equipment vendors, commissioning teams, and internal engineering leadership, you will independently review and verify electrical designs to ensure critical power systems deliver the required availability under real-world failure and maintenance conditions.
The role is particularly focused on the challenges created by AI and HPC environments, including high-density racks, volatile step loads, power quality, BESS load smoothing, and highly resilient distribution architectures.
Key Responsibilities
- Review electrical designs, calculations, studies, and vendor submittals, including one-lines, load flow, short-circuit, coordination, arc-flash, harmonic studies, breaker/relay settings, grounding, busway, and EPMS architecture.
- Assess critical power distribution against defined 99.99% / 99.999% availability targets, including N+1, 2N, distributed-redundant, and block-redundant configurations.
- Evaluate system-level fault tolerance and concurrent maintainability, including FMEA review and identification of common-mode failures.
- Review large multi-MW UPS systems, including redundancy, static and maintenance bypass, paralleling, load sharing, battery/flywheel autonomy, step-load behavior, and IEEE 519 harmonic performance.
- Review and validate BESS systems used for AI/HPC load smoothing, including ramp-rate control, inverter behavior, state-of-charge management, and interaction with UPS and upstream generation.
- Evaluate busway and rack-level distribution for ampacity, thermal derating, voltage drop, short-circuit withstand, selectivity, and branch-level monitoring.
- Perform independent electrical studies and verification using ETAP, including load flow, short-circuit, protective device coordination, arc-flash, and harmonic analysis.
- Review designs for compliance with NEC, NFPA 70E, NFPA 855, IEEE, ANSI, UL 891, UL 1558, UL 857, UL 1778, and UL 9540/9540A requirements.
- Provide field engineering support throughout construction, managing technical RFIs, deviations, nonconformance items, and design review issues.
- Review commissioning plans and acceptance criteria and witness FAT, SAT, relay testing, energization, load-bank testing, and integrated systems testing.
- Support final demonstrations of failover, redundancy, and concurrent maintainability under representative data center loads.
- Provide clear, independent technical recommendations to engineering leadership, contractors, vendors, and commissioning teams.
What We're Looking For
- BSEE from an ABET-accredited program or equivalent international qualification.
- Typically 8+ years of electrical power systems engineering experience.
- Experience carrying at least one major data hall or mission-critical electrical scope through design, construction, startup, and commissioning.
- Strong knowledge of MV/LV switchgear, UPS, PDU/RPP, transformers, and busway-to-rack distribution.
- Experience with 2N, N+1, distributed-redundant, and/or block-redundant electrical architectures.
- Hands-on experience with multi-MW static UPS systems, including bypass arrangements, redundancy, paralleling, batteries/flywheels, and step-load performance.
- Strong hands-on ETAP capabilities across load flow, short-circuit, coordination, arc-flash, and harmonic analysis.
- Knowledge of ANSI, IEEE, NEC, NFPA 70E, NFPA 855, and relevant UL standards.
- Experience working within an EPC or design-build environment, with knowledge of IFC releases, submittals, RFIs, vendor data, construction, and turnover.
- Previous data center, hyperscale, mission-critical, AI, or HPC infrastructure experience strongly preferred.
- Experience with BESS integration and load smoothing is highly desirable.
- PE preferred but not required. NFPA 70E, ACG/NEBB commissioning credentials, or Uptime Institute ATD credentials are advantageous.
Why This Role?
This is an opportunity to move beyond traditional electrical design into a true owner-side technical engineering role, helping determine whether some of the most advanced critical power systems being built today will actually perform as intended.
You'll work across the full lifecycle, from design verification through construction and commissioning, on infrastructure supporting AI and HPC workloads where multi-MW power requirements, rapid load swings, redundancy, and uptime create engineering challenges that conventional data centers do not always face.
For a strong mission-critical electrical engineer who wants technical authority, major project exposure, and hands-on involvement through commissioning, this is a particularly compelling opportunity.
