About the Opportunity
A well-established engineering and automation solutions provider is seeking a Senior Building Automation Design Engineer to join its growing technical team. This position plays a critical role in delivering advanced building control and energy management solutions across a variety of commercial, healthcare, institutional, industrial, and mission-critical facilities.
This individual will act as a technical leader throughout the design phase of projects, working closely with project managers, field technicians, contractors, consultants, and end users to develop complete control system designs that support operational efficiency, occupant comfort, energy optimization, and long-term maintainability.
The ideal candidate combines strong HVAC controls expertise with practical knowledge of mechanical and electrical systems, construction processes, and automation technologies.
Responsibilities
- Develop complete control system design packages for building automation projects of varying size and complexity.
- Produce detailed engineering documentation, panel layouts, network architectures, points lists, sequences of operation, and control drawings.
- Interpret project plans, specifications, and contract documents to ensure designs meet customer and project requirements.
- Collaborate with project management teams during project execution and implementation.
- Serve as a technical resource for installation teams, startup technicians, commissioning personnel, and subcontractors.
- Participate in design reviews and quality assurance processes to ensure consistency and accuracy of deliverables.
- Evaluate project requirements and identify opportunities to improve system performance, reduce costs, and simplify implementation.
- Review mechanical and electrical drawings to verify compatibility with automation system design.
- Troubleshoot technical design challenges and recommend practical solutions throughout project execution.
- Maintain engineering documentation and design standards while contributing to continuous process improvement initiatives.
- Support equipment procurement activities, including material verification, technical review, and coordination with vendors.
- Attend coordination meetings with owners, consulting engineers, contractors, and project stakeholders.
- Identify scope discrepancies, design conflicts, specification gaps, and change requirements throughout the project lifecycle.
- Assist with the transition of projects from design to implementation by providing thorough technical handoff documentation.
- Support development of standardized engineering practices, templates, and design methodologies.
- Review and mentor the work of junior engineering team members when necessary.
- Manage multiple concurrent projects while maintaining quality, accuracy, and deadlines.
- Provide technical guidance regarding HVAC controls, electrical interfaces, communication networks, and integration strategies.
- Ensure designs align with industry standards, applicable codes, and client requirements.
Technical Qualifications
Candidates should possess strong experience designing and engineering Building Automation Systems (BAS), Building Management Systems (BMS), or Direct Digital Control (DDC) systems.

Education & Experience
One of the following is preferred:
- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering
- Associate Degree in Engineering Technology, Applied Technology, or related discipline
- Equivalent combination of technical education and industry experience
Additionally:
- 5+ years of experience within Building Automation, HVAC Controls, Energy Management Systems, or related controls engineering environments.
- Experience supporting commercial, healthcare, institutional, industrial, or mission-critical facilities is highly desirable.
- Familiarity with construction processes and coordination among mechanical, electrical, and controls disciplines.
Work Environment
- Hybrid schedule consisting of three days in the office and two days working remotely.
- Occasional visits to project sites may be required.
- Position may involve periods of sitting, standing, walking, climbing ladders, or lifting equipment and materials as required.
- Valid driver's license required.
