Senior Project Engineering Manager - Substation
About the Opportunity
A leading employee-owned engineering, consulting, and EPC firm is seeking a Substation Project Engineering Manager to support the delivery of complex power delivery and substation projects. This role offers the opportunity to lead multidisciplinary engineering teams, oversee project execution, and work directly with utility, industrial, renewable energy, data center, and infrastructure clients across North America.
The organization is heavily involved in the design and delivery of:
- Transmission & Distribution Substations
- Renewable Energy Interconnections
- Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) Integration
- Data Center Power Infrastructure
- HVDC, FACTS, and Grid Modernization Projects
- Utility and Industrial Power Delivery Programs

Key Responsibilities
Project Leadership
- Lead multidisciplinary engineering and design teams on substation and power delivery projects.
- Manage project scope, budgets, schedules, and overall quality.
- Coordinate activities across multiple engineering disciplines.
- Serve as the responsible engineering lead for assigned projects.
- Ensure engineering deliverables meet client requirements and industry standards.
- Support engineering calculations, equipment selection, and technical evaluations.
Client & Business Development
- Act as a primary point of contact for clients throughout project execution.
- Identify client objectives and develop solutions that align with project goals.
- Support proposal development, project pursuits, and business development efforts.
- Build and maintain long-term client relationships.
- Assist with project change management and contract negotiations.
Technical Leadership
- Provide technical guidance on complex substation projects.
- Mentor and support engineers, designers, and project teams.
- Drive problem-solving and engineering innovation.
- Review and approve engineering work products.
Team Management
- Lead, mentor, and develop engineering staff.
- Participate in hiring, performance management, and career development activities.
- Foster collaboration across project teams and disciplines.
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional Engineer (PE) License strongly preferred.
- Experience managing substation, switchyard, or power delivery engineering projects.
- Background supporting EPC and/or engineering consulting projects.
- Strong understanding of:
- Substation physical design
- Protection & Control systems
- Civil and structural coordination
- Major substation equipment and layouts
- Engineering design standards and industry best practices
- Experience developing project estimates, schedules, and engineering budgets.
- Strong client-facing communication and relationship-building skills.
- Understanding of procurement processes and contract administration.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related engineering discipline.
- 8+ years of experience in substation, transmission, or power delivery engineering.
- Previous experience leading project teams and coordinating across multiple disciplines.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to successfully complete applicable pre-employment screening requirements.
