Position Overview
This role is responsible for the design, engineering, and construction of complex electrical substation and power systems, as well as analysis of protection systems to support large-scale infrastructure and strategic initiatives. The position involves technical leadership, project oversight, and coordination with internal and external stakeholders.
Hybrid work options may be available, with periodic travel required between project sites.
Key Responsibilities
- Compile, evaluate, and analyze engineering design and testing data
- Utilize computer-aided engineering and design tools to perform system analysis
- Prepare and review technical drawings, specifications, calculations, and test reports related to substation design and operation
- Ensure designs comply with applicable standards, codes, and customer requirements
- Design, implement, maintain, and improve electrical power systems and substation equipment
- Perform detailed engineering calculations for construction, installation, and design standards
- Develop material and equipment specifications and support procurement activities
- Conduct fault studies and protection relay settings for transformers, feeders, and transmission lines
- Oversee and manage large, complex substation projects with minimal supervision
- Monitor project progress to ensure schedules, budgets, and quality standards are met
- Perform site visits and construction inspections as required
- Coordinate with consultants, utilities, developers, and regulatory agencies
- Serve as a technical subject matter expert for regulatory compliance and industry standards
- Prepare conceptual and detailed design documentation for assigned projects
- Review approval drawings for major and long-lead equipment
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to less experienced engineers
- Lead or support project teams and cross-functional initiatives
- Maintain confidentiality of sensitive and proprietary information
- Stay current with advancements in power systems and substation technologies
- Perform other engineering duties as assigned
Leadership Responsibilities
- Provides leadership, coaching, and mentoring to junior engineering staff
- May act as a project lead or first-level supervisor as needed
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Strong knowledge of substation design, construction, and protection systems
- Proficiency with engineering software and tools (e.g., CAD and power system analysis programs)
- Working knowledge of power system materials and applicable industry standards
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, drawings, and specifications
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and engineering judgment skills
- Excellent time management and ability to manage multiple priorities
- Effective verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to collaborate across disciplines and with external stakeholders
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field
- Professional Engineer (PE) license
- Eight (8) or more years of relevant engineering experience
- Valid driver's license
