Structural Engineer (PE or Near-PE)

Greater Chicago Area or Central Illinois

Looking for more than another building design role?

A nationally recognised, employee-owned consulting engineering firm is looking to add a Structural Engineer to its growing team. With offices in both the Greater Chicago area and Central Illinois, this opportunity offers the chance to work on complex infrastructure projects that have a direct impact on communities across the Midwest.

This position is ideally suited to an engineer with several years of structural design experience who has recently obtained their Professional Engineer (PE) licence or is on track to achieve licensure in the near future.

Unlike traditional structural consulting roles, this opportunity provides exposure to large-scale infrastructure projects involving water, wastewater, industrial and municipal facilities. You'll collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, take ownership of project deliverables and have a clear pathway into technical leadership, project management or client-facing responsibilities.

The Role

As a Structural Engineer, you will be involved in the planning, analysis, design and delivery of a variety of infrastructure projects from concept through to construction.

Responsibilities include:

  • Structural design and analysis of reinforced concrete, steel and masonry structures
  • Preparation of calculations, technical reports and construction documents
  • Coordination with civil, mechanical, electrical and process engineering teams
  • Participation in project meetings and client interactions
  • Site visits, inspections and construction support activities
  • Assisting with project delivery, budgeting and scheduling
  • Supporting junior engineers and contributing to technical excellence within the team
  • Working closely with senior leadership on projects that shape critical public infrastructure

What They're Looking For

  • Bachelor's degree in Structural Engineering, Civil Engineering or similar
  • PE licence obtained or expected within the next 12-18 months
  • 4+ years of structural engineering experience
  • Experience designing concrete and steel structures
  • Familiarity with structural analysis software and BIM/CADD platforms
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Desire to work within multidisciplinary project teams
  • Interest in long-term career progression and expanding responsibilities

Preferred

  • Master's degree in Structural Engineering
  • Experience within infrastructure, industrial, municipal or water-related projects
  • Exposure to construction administration or project management activities

Why This Opportunity Stands Out

  • Employee-owned business with a strong reputation across the Midwest
  • Diverse project portfolio with long-term backlog and repeat client relationships
  • Opportunity to work on meaningful infrastructure projects rather than repetitive commercial developments
  • Clear progression into project management, technical leadership or client development
  • Collaborative environment where engineers are encouraged to influence standards, processes and project delivery
  • Flexible working arrangements
  • Strong compensation package including bonus potential, retirement contributions and comprehensive benefits
  • Stable, growing organisation with an excellent track record of project wins and technical excellence

The Bottom Line

If you're approaching PE licensure and looking for an environment where you can accelerate your technical development while gaining exposure to larger, more complex projects, this is an opportunity worth exploring.

The firm is particularly interested in engineers who want to build a long-term career, take ownership of their work and play a key role in delivering infrastructure projects that matter.
