Structural Engineer

Working arrangement: Hybrid and flexible working
Compensation: Competitive six-figure base salary plus a strong benefits and incentive package

Are you looking for greater technical variety, meaningful project ownership, and the resources to work on genuinely complex buildings?

I am representing an established engineering consultancy that is expanding its structural buildings team in Boston. The group works across a diverse portfolio of new construction, renovation, adaptive reuse, and existing-building projects throughout the Northeast and beyond.

Projects cover technically demanding commercial, institutional, research, education, cultural, healthcare, and public-sector environments. The successful engineer will be exposed to different structural systems, materials, design challenges, and project stages rather than being restricted to one building type or a repetitive delivery role.

This opportunity would suit a licensed structural engineer who wants to remain technically involved while taking on greater responsibility for projects, clients, and developing engineers.

The Position

You will take meaningful ownership of structural building projects from early concept and analysis through detailed design, documentation, and construction.

Working closely with architects, clients, contractors, and engineers from other disciplines, you will help develop practical structural solutions that respond to architectural intent, technical constraints, programme requirements, and construction considerations.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Leading the structural design and delivery of building projects
  • Developing structural solutions using steel, concrete, timber, masonry, and other appropriate materials
  • Completing and reviewing gravity and lateral-system analysis
  • Producing and reviewing design calculations, drawings, specifications, and technical documentation
  • Coordinating structural requirements with architectural and multidisciplinary project teams
  • Supporting projects through permitting, procurement, and construction
  • Reviewing contractor submissions and resolving technical queries
  • Attending project meetings and conducting construction-site visits
  • Communicating structural concepts and recommendations to clients and project stakeholders
  • Providing technical guidance and quality reviews for developing engineers
  • Contributing to early-stage design discussions and helping improve overall project outcomes
  • Managing priorities across multiple projects while maintaining a high standard of technical delivery

The project mix includes both new construction and work involving existing structures. Experience with renovations, repairs, repositioning, or adaptive reuse would therefore be valuable, but it is not essential.

Why Consider the Opportunity?

This is not a narrowly defined production position. The successful engineer will have the opportunity to influence design decisions, build direct client relationships, and develop towards broader project or team leadership.

Key selling points include:

  • A varied portfolio of new-build and existing-building projects
  • Exposure to complex, design-led structural challenges
  • Meaningful involvement from early design through construction
  • Close collaboration with architects and specialist engineering teams
  • The opportunity to work across several building sectors
  • Greater project and technical ownership
  • Support for continued learning and professional development
  • Opportunities to mentor and guide developing engineers
  • A collaborative working environment that values technical judgement
  • Flexible hybrid working
  • Strong long-term financial, healthcare, and wellbeing benefits
  • Performance-related financial incentives

What We're Looking For

You should have:

  • An accredited degree in civil, structural, or architectural engineering
  • Significant structural building-design experience within a consulting environment
  • An active Professional Engineer licence
  • Strong knowledge of structural engineering fundamentals and relevant building codes
  • Experience designing steel and concrete building structures
  • A solid understanding of lateral systems, including wind and seismic design
  • Familiarity with timber, masonry, renovation, or existing buildings would be beneficial
  • Confidence using recognised structural analysis and design platforms
  • Experience working within a BIM-led project environment
  • The ability to coordinate effectively with architects, contractors, clients, and other engineering disciplines
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • The confidence to make sound technical decisions and manage competing project priorities
  • An interest in supporting junior engineers and contributing to technical reviews

The position is likely to suit someone operating at an established senior level, although capability, project experience, and leadership potential will be considered ahead of a rigid number of years.

Compensation and Benefits

The company offers a competitive six-figure base salary, determined by experience, qualifications, and technical background.

The wider package includes:

  • Performance-related financial rewards
  • A highly competitive retirement programme
  • Comprehensive and affordable healthcare options
  • Dental and vision coverage
  • Employer-funded healthcare savings support for eligible plans
  • Company-provided life and disability protection
  • Paid time off and company holidays
  • Family-building and broader wellbeing support
  • Flexible and hybrid working arrangements
  • Professional-development and technical-learning opportunities

Full details of the compensation and benefits package will be shared during a confidential initial conversation.

Interested?

This opportunity would suit a Senior Structural Engineer who wants to remain close to the technical work while gaining greater influence over projects, design decisions, clients, and developing engineers.

If you are open to exploring the market, apply or get in touch for a confidential, non-committal conversation about the team, project portfolio, progression opportunities, and overall compensation package.
