Overview
A nationally recognized transportation and infrastructure consulting firm is seeking a Regional Transportation Engineering Director to lead and expand engineering operations across the eastern United States. This role is ideal for a senior engineering leader with a strong background in transportation design, operational leadership, business development, and team development.
The successful candidate will provide strategic direction for multiple offices, oversee project delivery and financial performance, develop high-performing teams, and help drive growth across a diverse transportation engineering portfolio. Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership
- Develop and execute long-term growth strategies for the regional engineering practice.
- Drive revenue growth, profitability, and operational performance.
- Lead organizational planning, resource allocation, and business initiatives.
- Champion innovation and continuous improvement across engineering operations.
- Collaborate with executive leadership on budgeting, forecasting, and expansion efforts.
Operations & Project Delivery
- Provide oversight of complex transportation and civil infrastructure projects.
- Ensure projects are delivered on schedule, within budget, and to quality standards.
- Monitor key business metrics including utilization, backlog, revenue, and profitability.
- Implement best practices that improve efficiency and client satisfaction.
- Support risk management and quality assurance initiatives.
Team Leadership
- Lead, mentor, and develop engineering managers, project managers, and technical staff.
- Establish clear performance expectations and career development plans.
- Foster a collaborative, high-performance culture.
- Support recruiting, retention, and succession planning efforts.
- Promote cross-functional collaboration across engineering and related disciplines.
Business Development & Client Management
- Build and maintain relationships with public and private sector clients.
- Support pursuit strategies, proposal development, and major project interviews.
- Identify new market opportunities and areas for strategic growth.
- Serve as a trusted advisor to key clients and stakeholders.
- Contribute to regional and national business development efforts.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or a related field.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
- 15+ years of transportation engineering experience.
- 8+ years leading projects with P&L or financial management responsibility.
- 5+ years managing engineering teams and operations.
- Demonstrated success growing client relationships and winning work.
- Strong understanding of transportation project delivery and engineering consulting operations.
- Proven ability to lead multi-office teams and large-scale initiatives.
Leadership Competencies

- Experience managing budgets, staffing plans, and operational performance.

Technical Background
Preferred experience includes:
- Transportation engineering and roadway design.
- Multimodal transportation systems.
- Infrastructure planning and project delivery.
- Plans, Specifications & Estimates (PS&E) development.
- Large, multidisciplinary transportation projects.
- Familiarity with tools such as Civil 3D, OpenRoads, MicroStation, MS Project, and related project management platforms.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's Degree in Engineering, Business Administration, or related field.
- Experience overseeing regional operations across multiple offices.
- Active involvement in industry organizations and professional associations.
- Experience mentoring senior engineering and project management staff.
- Background leading complex transportation infrastructure programs.
