The role of Director of Pre-Construction is pivotal within the Engineering and Execution team, concentrating on contracting grid-scale renewables projects, encompassing Onshore Wind, Solar, and Battery Energy Storage Solutions
We are seeking a highly seasoned and motivated Director with a fervent dedication to renewable energy to join the E&D division of our team. Reporting to the Head of Strategic Supply and Optimization, the Director of Pre-Construction will work closely with various segments of the overall E&D division and the broader company.
This position will primarily involve preparing and overseeing contract bidding, along with managing pre-construction phase activities. Additionally, the Director will lead contract negotiations and offer recommendations to the Leadership team for contract awards. Upon successful contract placement, the Director of Pre-Construction will ensure a seamless handover and provide effective legacy support to the Director of Delivery, ultimately ensuring the delivery of safe, timely, cost-effective, and leading-edge renewable energy projects.
Successful execution of this role necessitates clear and consistent coordination of multiple project stakeholders, including developers, contractors, vendors, owners, and financing partners. The Director of Pre-Construction must possess exceptional project management skills and the ability to adeptly lead a project team through complex challenges. Additionally, the Director will oversee a team of six direct reports.
Responsibilities Renewable Director of Pre-Construction:
- Provide project management services, coordination, and support for large and complex wind, solar, and storage projects during the pre-construction phase.
- Liaise with project development teams to facilitate earlier project engagement and coordination efforts to ensure smooth transition into the delivery phase.
- Support and provide delivery expertise and oversight for engineering design and permitting efforts.
- Direct adequate resourcing plans to support the delivery of all pre-construction deliverables for renewable energy projects as required.
- Oversee the request for proposal (RFP) process for engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) services.
- Manage the commercial aspects of all project-related contract negotiations.
- Provide direction and coordination for pre-construction activities, including site studies, surveys, preliminary engineering, and estimating.
- Actively identify and manage critical path issues and risks to minimize project impacts.
- Coordinate key project stakeholders, including Balance of Plant (BOP), Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contractor.
- Participate in the negotiation of key project contracts, including Major Equipment Supply Agreements and BOP-EPC Agreement.
- Ensure project schedules and costs are managed and tracking to plan.
- Continuously assess project risk and maintain the project Risk Register during the pre-construction phase.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with all parties involved in the development and approval of the project.
- Be accountable for a portfolio of projects as the team expands.
- Develop and/or maintain department guides, standards, and processes to support departmental efforts.
What You'll Bring as the Renewables Director of Pre-Construction:
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related science field, or equivalent technical training.
- Minimum 10 years of project management and procurement experience in utility-scale renewable energy and/or heavy construction.
- Project Management Professional Certification (PMP) or equivalent.
- Experience with various project and construction management software tools, e.g., Procore.
- Demonstrated experience in leading and directing teams across various workstreams and multiple projects simultaneously.
- Advanced Microsoft Software Applications skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Project).
- Proven track record of leading and managing projects with results that meet all stakeholder goals.
- Critical thinker with the ability to problem solve and achieve results by setting priorities and staying organized.
- Results-oriented leader with the ability to work independently within a large matrixed organization while effectively interfacing with various cross-functional employee groups.
- Experience in project bidding and contracting.
- Working knowledge of OSHA.
- Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills, with the ability to communicate effectively across all interfaces, technical specification and report writing, and presentation skills.
- Excellent personal organization and time management skills with a tenacity, persistence, and determination to succeed.

- Must be available to travel domestically/internationally up to 33% of the time.
