Civil/Structural Engineer - Substations
Location: Greater Philadelphia Area, PA (Hybrid)
A well-established engineering firm is seeking a Civil/Structural Engineer to support the design and development of high-voltage substation projects (4kV-230kV+), including renewable energy interconnections. This role involves structural and civil design, site planning, and coordination with multidisciplinary teams to deliver high-quality, code-compliant solutions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Structural Design: Develop steel structure and concrete foundation designs for substation components such as rigid and strain bus supports, fire walls, oil containment systems, and metal grate platforms.
- Civil Site Development: Assist in creating general arrangements, conduit and grounding plans, and review site plans for permitting, erosion control, and stormwater management compliance.
- Technical Documentation: Prepare detailed construction drawings, design calculations, and bills of materials. Support the development of construction sequences and RFP documentation.
- Coordination & Collaboration: Work closely with physical designers, substation engineers, transmission and distribution teams, geotechnical engineers, and surveyors to ensure cohesive project execution.
- Project Support: Participate in technical reviews, client meetings, and provide input on procurement and construction phases. Contribute to continuous improvement and quality assurance efforts.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited institution
- Minimum 4 years of experience in high-voltage substation civil/structural design
- Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in at least one U.S. state
- Proficient in AutoCAD, MicroStation, and 3D modeling tools (e.g., Civil 3D, MicroStation V8i)
- Experience with structural analysis software such as PLS-CADD, LPILE, STAAD, or similar
- Strong understanding of NESC, ASCE, and other applicable codes and standards
Preferred Skills:
- Familiarity with bus fault stress analysis and substation grounding/conduit design
- Experience reviewing and preparing permit-ready site plans
- Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment
- Strong communication skills and a collaborative mindset
- Passion for mentoring and supporting junior team members
