Director of Engineering - Building Automation Systems (Data Centres)

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Director of Engineering to lead the engineering function for our rapidly growing Data Centre Building Automation and Controls division. This individual will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of controls engineering, including system design, hardware submittals, programming standards, technical execution, commissioning support, and engineering team development.

The ideal candidate will possess extensive experience within Building Automation Systems (BAS), mission-critical environments, and large-scale data centre projects. They will serve as the technical authority for the organisation while ensuring consistency, quality, scalability, and successful project delivery.

Key Responsibilities

Engineering Leadership

• Lead, mentor, and develop a team of Controls Engineers, Design Engineers, Programmers, and Commissioning Engineers.
• Establish engineering standards, best practices, and quality control processes across all projects.
• Create scalable engineering workflows that support continued business growth.
• Provide technical leadership throughout the project lifecycle from concept through commissioning and handover.
• Participate in strategic business planning and resource forecasting.

Controls Design & Hardware Engineering

• Oversee development of BAS control drawings, network architectures, sequences of operation, points lists, and system documentation.
• Review and approve hardware submittals for control panels, controllers, field devices, sensors, actuators, and networking equipment.
• Ensure compliance with project specifications, customer requirements, and industry standards.
• Standardise engineering templates, design methodologies, and documentation processes.
• Support value engineering initiatives while maintaining system performance and reliability.

BAS Programming & System Integration

• Establish and enforce programming standards across all BAS projects.
• Review and support controller programming, graphical user interface development, alarming, trending, and supervisory system configuration.
• Provide advanced troubleshooting and technical support on complex projects.
• Lead integration efforts involving HVAC systems, power monitoring, electrical systems, mechanical equipment, and third-party platforms.
• Oversee implementations using platforms such as Tridium Niagara, Distech, Johnson Controls Metasys, Siemens Desigo, Delta Controls, Schneider Electric EcoStruxure, or similar technologies.

Data Centre Controls Expertise

• Lead controls engineering for mission-critical facilities including hyperscale, colocation, enterprise, and edge data centres.
• Support design and automation strategies for:
  • CRAH/CRAC systems
  • Chilled water plants
  • Cooling towers
  • AHUs and ventilation systems
  • Power monitoring systems
  • Generator and UPS monitoring
  • Environmental monitoring platforms
• Ensure systems meet uptime, redundancy, reliability, and operational requirements associated with critical facilities.

Project Delivery & Client Engagement

• Support project teams throughout design, engineering, installation, commissioning, and turnover phases.
• Participate in client meetings, technical design reviews, and project planning sessions.
• Assist with proposal development, technical sales support, and project estimation activities.
• Act as the primary engineering escalation point for clients and internal stakeholders.
• Collaborate with project management teams to ensure projects remain on schedule and within budget.

Commissioning & Quality Assurance

• Establish engineering QA/QC procedures.
• Support startup, commissioning, functional performance testing, and system validation.
• Review commissioning documentation and issue resolution processes.
• Drive continuous improvement initiatives based on project performance and lessons learned.
