Building Enclosure Consultant
Building Enclosure Consultant | Minneapolis, MN
About the Company
Our client is a specialist building enclosure consulting firm based in Minnesota. Unlike multidisciplinary engineering companies, the firm is entirely focused on the design, assessment, and performance of building enclosure systems.
The team supports a range of educational, commercial, institutional, and corporate clients on both new construction and existing-building projects. Their services span investigation, design, construction administration, quality assurance, testing, and commissioning.
This is a highly collaborative environment where employees are involved throughout the complete project lifecycle. Team members are not divided into rigid departments, meaning consultants gain exposure to design, fieldwork, construction-phase services, project management, and client relationships.
Position Overview
Our client is looking to hire at multiple levels, from recent graduates interested in developing a career in building enclosure consulting through to experienced consultants and project managers.
This is a hands-on position suited to someone who wants to be involved in every stage of a project. You will contribute to technical design, attend construction sites, support existing-building assessments, coordinate with clients and contractors, and help manage projects through construction and closeout.
While the firm has designated field professionals, every team member is expected to remain connected to the construction phase. Candidates should therefore be comfortable working on active construction sites and collaborating directly with contractors, architects, engineers, and owners.
For experienced hires, the role will include greater responsibility for project delivery, client management, technical oversight, and mentoring junior staff.
Role & Responsibilities
- Support building enclosure projects from initial assessment and design through construction and closeout
- Perform field observations, existing-building assessments, and construction-phase quality assurance
- Prepare technical details, specifications, reports, and other project documentation
- Review roofing, waterproofing, wall, façade, air barrier, and thermal enclosure systems
- Coordinate directly with owners, architects, contractors, manufacturers, and other project stakeholders
- Manage project schedules, budgets, deliverables, and client expectations
- Participate in design meetings, construction meetings, and site visits
- Identify installation issues and communicate practical recommendations to project teams
- Develop and maintain strong client relationships
- Contribute to the technical development and mentoring of less experienced team members
- Participate in industry organizations and pursue relevant building enclosure certifications
- Continue developing technical knowledge through structured professional education
Qualifications
The company is open to candidates at different stages of their careers. Relevant backgrounds may include architecture, architectural engineering, civil engineering, structural engineering, construction, roofing, waterproofing, or building science.
Successful candidates will ideally demonstrate:
- An interest in or existing knowledge of building enclosure systems
- The ability and willingness to work on active construction sites
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- A collaborative, responsive, and client-focused approach
- An interest in handling a varied workload rather than working within one narrow discipline
- The ability to manage priorities across office-based and field-based responsibilities
- A genuine commitment to learning and developing technical expertise
- A valid driver's license and the ability to travel to project sites
For project management and senior-level positions, candidates should also have experience delivering building enclosure projects, managing clients, and coordinating projects through the design and construction phases.
Preferred Experience
- Building enclosure consulting, design, commissioning, or construction experience
- Knowledge of roofing, waterproofing, air barriers, exterior walls, façades, and thermal systems
- Experience with construction administration or quality assurance
- Existing-building investigations and condition assessments
- Previous experience working for a specialist contractor, architectural practice, engineering consultancy, or enclosure manufacturer
- Professional licensure as a PE or Registered Architect
- Building enclosure certifications or an interest in obtaining them
- Involvement with relevant building enclosure industry organizations
Professional licensure is valued but is not the only measure of technical development. The firm also places significant importance on enclosure-specific education, certifications, and industry involvement.
Training & Development
Building enclosure consulting takes time to learn, and the company is prepared to invest in candidates who demonstrate the right attitude, technical curiosity, and cultural fit.
A meaningful portion of employees' time is dedicated to continuing education and professional development. Team members are encouraged to pursue technical certifications, attend industry events, participate in professional organizations, and learn directly from specialists across the business.
This makes the opportunity suitable for both experienced enclosure professionals and candidates looking to transition into the field from architecture, engineering, construction, or a related technical background.
Working Environment
This is an office-based and highly collaborative culture. Employees work alongside colleagues with different areas of technical expertise and are encouraged to discuss challenges, share knowledge, and solve problems collectively.
The company operates with minimal micromanagement, but employees are expected to be communicative, responsive, and engaged with the wider team. This environment will suit someone who enjoys working closely with colleagues and wants regular access to experienced technical professionals.
Travel varies depending on project requirements. Most work is based in Minnesota, although projects can involve travel throughout the United States. Travel may become more frequent during the summer construction season, potentially including trips every few weeks for assessments, design meetings, and construction-phase services.
Compensation & Benefits
- Base salary of approximately $80,000-$170,000, dependent on building enclosure experience, licensure, technical background, and project management capabilities
- Profit-sharing program, historically targeting approximately 5% or more depending on company performance
- Dedicated support for continuing education and professional certifications
- Exposure to the complete building enclosure project lifecycle
- Direct access to experienced technical specialists
- Clear opportunities to develop into project management and client leadership
- Long-term career progression within a stable specialist consultancy
- Hands-on experience across design, investigation, construction, and quality assurance
Why Join?
