Civil Design Engineer

Location: Denver Metro Area, Colorado
Compensation: $85,000 to $110,000
Employment Type: Full-time

The Opportunity

An employee-owned engineering consultancy is seeking a Civil Design Engineer to support major earthwork, mining, and water-management projects in the United States and internationally.

The engineer will work with civil, geotechnical, water resources, and geological professionals to develop designs for tailings storage facilities, heap leach facilities, water-retaining structures, mine infrastructure, and closure and reclamation projects.

This position is suited to an early-career civil engineer who wants to build strong technical design capabilities while gaining exposure to field investigations, construction support, and multidisciplinary project delivery.

Key Responsibilities

Civil Design and Documentation

  • Support civil designs from conceptual and feasibility-level studies through issued-for-construction and record drawings.
  • Develop grading, drainage, access road, pipeline, containment, and general site-development plans.
  • Prepare plan sets, profiles, sections, details, quantity estimates, and technical specifications.
  • Develop three-dimensional surfaces, alignments, corridors, pipe networks, and grading models.
  • Perform cut-and-fill calculations and support the development of earthwork quantities.
  • Assist with the design of tailings storage facilities, heap leach pads, process ponds, water-management structures, and associated mine infrastructure.
  • Support closure and reclamation designs, including regrading, drainage, cover systems, and long-term site stabilization.
  • Coordinate civil designs with geotechnical, hydrologic, hydrogeological, structural, and environmental requirements.

Technical Analysis

  • Support hydrologic and hydraulic evaluations for channels, culverts, diversion structures, ponds, spillways, and stormwater systems.
  • Assist with pipeline sizing, hydraulic calculations, and water-balance inputs.
  • Review survey, aerial mapping, subsurface, and existing-condition data.
  • Evaluate design alternatives based on constructability, cost, performance, and site constraints.
  • Prepare design calculations, technical memoranda, reports, and supporting documentation.
  • Assist with quantity takeoffs and engineer's construction cost estimates.

Project and Construction Support

  • Coordinate design tasks with project managers, technical leads, and CAD professionals.
  • Track assigned tasks against established scope, schedule, and budget.
  • Support the preparation of proposals, scopes of work, and fee estimates.
  • Participate in internal design reviews and quality-control processes.
  • Respond to technical questions during bidding and construction.
  • Review construction submittals, requests for information, and field documentation.
  • Participate in site visits, field investigations, construction observations, and record-documentation activities.
  • Travel within the United States and internationally as project needs require.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline.
  • 2-5 years of relevant civil design, consulting, internship, or construction experience.
  • Engineer-in-Training certification or a clear plan to complete the FE examination. PE Preferred.
  • Working knowledge of civil site design, grading, drainage, earthwork, and construction documentation.
  • Experience with AutoCAD and Civil 3D through professional work, internships, or academic projects.
  • Ability to prepare clear calculations, design documentation, and technical writing.
  • Strong attention to detail and willingness to take ownership of assigned work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with engineers, designers, field personnel, and project managers.
  • Willingness to participate in field assignments and travel to project sites.

Compensation and Benefits

The anticipated base salary range is $85,000 to $110,000, depending on experience, education, technical capabilities, and professional credentials.

The company offers a comprehensive benefits package that includes:

  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage
  • Health savings account with employer contribution
  • Traditional and Roth 401(k) options with employer matching
  • Paid vacation, sick leave, parental leave, and company holidays
  • Life and disability insurance
  • Employee ownership and profit-sharing participation
  • Professional development and tuition support
  • Technical training and mentorship
  • Additional compensation for certain extended field or international assignments

About the Employer
