About the Opportunity
A leading renewable energy developer and EPC contractor is expanding its utility-scale renewable energy portfolio across Australia and Southeast Asia and is seeking a Solar & BESS Design & Commissioning Engineer to support the technical development and delivery of clean energy projects.
This role will play a critical part in supporting projects across the full lifecycle, from feasibility studies and project development through detailed engineering, construction support, commissioning, energisation, and project handover. The successful candidate will have hands-on experience delivering both Solar PV and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects, with BESS expertise considered essential.
The position offers exposure to utility-scale solar, battery energy storage, hybrid renewable energy systems, microgrids, mining-sector applications, and off-grid projects across Australia, Southeast Asia, and island nations.
Key Responsibilities
Engineering Design
- Support the development and engineering of utility-scale Solar PV and BESS projects.
- Prepare and review technical calculations, equipment specifications, design documentation, and engineering studies.
- Participate in feasibility assessments, concept design, detailed design reviews, and technical due diligence activities.
- Evaluate and review:
- Single Line Diagrams (SLDs)
- Protection and control philosophies
- Cable sizing calculations
- Earthing and lightning protection systems
- Auxiliary electrical systems
- SCADA and communications interfaces
- Review EPC design packages and ensure compliance with project requirements, applicable standards, and client specifications.
Project Development Support
- Provide technical input during project development, tendering, and bid submission processes.
- Collaborate with business development, commercial, and project development teams to evaluate and progress new project opportunities.
- Support technical discussions with customers, consultants, utilities, regulators, and other key stakeholders.
- Conduct technical assessments and vendor evaluations for:
- Solar modules
- Inverters
- Battery Energy Storage Systems
- Energy Management Systems (EMS)
- Balance-of-Plant (BoP) equipment
Commissioning & Project Delivery
- Support commissioning activities for Solar PV, BESS, hybrid energy, and microgrid projects.
- Develop and review commissioning procedures, testing plans, and functional performance testing documentation.
- Coordinate with EPC contractors, OEMs, consultants, and site teams throughout project delivery and commissioning phases.
- Participate in:
- Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT)
- Site Acceptance Testing (SAT)
- Energisation activities
- System integration testing
- Performance verification and project handover
- Troubleshoot technical issues during construction, commissioning, and operational readiness stages.
Technical Governance
- Ensure compliance with relevant Australian and international standards and industry best practices.
- Contribute to engineering governance, quality assurance processes, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Maintain technical documentation, engineering records, and lessons-learned databases.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Engineering, Renewable Energy Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Minimum 4-5 years of experience within renewable energy, power systems, or utility-scale infrastructure projects.
- Proven experience delivering utility-scale Solar PV and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects.
- Demonstrated involvement across engineering design, construction support, commissioning, energisation, and project handover.
- Strong understanding of power systems, grid-connected renewable energy assets, and electrical balance-of-plant systems.
Essential Experience
Candidates should demonstrate experience in:
- Utility-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)
- Utility-scale Solar PV plant design and engineering
- Commissioning, testing, and energisation of renewable energy assets
- Grid-connected renewable energy projects
- Hybrid systems integrating Solar PV and BESS technologies
- Microgrid and off-grid energy systems
- Working within multidisciplinary project teams involving developers, EPC contractors, consultants, utilities, and equipment suppliers
Experience across Australia and/or Southeast Asia will be highly regarded.
