HVAC Controls Technician - Building Automation (Detroit, MI)
About the Role
We are seeking a Controls Service Technician based in the Detroit, Michigan area to support the service, maintenance, troubleshooting, and optimization of building automation systems across commercial, healthcare, industrial, educational, and mission-critical facilities. This role places a strong emphasis on Johnson Controls (JCI) Metasys systems and requires a technician who can independently support customer sites, diagnose complex issues, and deliver high-quality service.
Key Responsibilities
Service, Maintenance & Troubleshooting
Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair Johnson Controls Metasys and other BAS/DDC systems.
Perform preventative maintenance, system health checks, and performance evaluations.
Diagnose issues with controllers, sensors, actuators, VFDs, and HVAC equipment.
Modify control sequences and implement system improvements to optimize performance.
Respond to service calls, customer requests, and emergency troubleshooting situations.
Identify root causes of system issues and implement effective corrective actions.
Johnson Controls System Support
Service and maintain Johnson Controls Metasys building automation systems.
Configure, replace, and commission JCI controllers and field devices.
Perform point-to-point checkout, startup, and functional testing.
Support system upgrades, controller replacements, and BAS expansions.
Troubleshoot BACnet, N2, Modbus, and IP-based communication networks.
Assist with graphics updates, alarm configuration, and database modifications.
Customer Support
Serve as the primary customer contact during service visits.
Communicate findings, recommendations, and system improvement opportunities.
Provide operator training and technical support when required.
Build strong customer relationships through professionalism, responsiveness, and technical expertise.
Identify opportunities for system upgrades, service agreements, and energy-saving improvements.
Documentation & Safety
Complete detailed service reports and maintain accurate records of work performed.
Update system documentation, drawings, and control databases as required.
Track labor, materials, and parts associated with service activities.
Follow all company, customer, and OSHA safety requirements.
Ensure all work is completed in accordance with industry standards and best practices.
Qualifications
3+ years of experience in Building Automation, HVAC Controls, or related BAS service roles.
Strong hands-on experience with Johnson Controls Metasys systems.
Solid understanding of HVAC equipment and control strategies.
Experience troubleshooting DDC controllers, field devices, and communication networks.
Knowledge of BACnet, N2, Modbus, and IP-based networking.
Ability to read and interpret control drawings, wiring diagrams, and sequences of operation.
Strong problem-solving, troubleshooting, and customer service skills.
Ability to work independently and effectively manage service calls.
Valid driver's license and clean driving record.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with Metasys UI, SCT, CCT, and supervisory systems.
Niagara N4 experience.
Low-voltage electrical troubleshooting experience.
Experience supporting commercial, healthcare, higher education, manufacturing, or industrial facilities.
Previous experience working for a Johnson Controls branch, authorized dealer, or systems integrator.
Experience with retrofit projects, system migrations, and commissioning activities.
Work Location & Travel
Must be based in or near Detroit, Michigan.
Local travel throughout the Greater Detroit Metro area, including Novi, Troy, Auburn Hills, Dearborn, Ann Arbor, and Southfield.
Occasional travel elsewhere in Michigan may be required based on project and customer needs.
