Forensic Structural Engineer - St Louis / Kansas City

An established, specialized forensic engineering and consulting firm with over three decades of experience is seeking a Structural Engineer to help expand its growing presence in the Midwest. Known for delivering highly responsive, best‑in‑class engineering services since its founding, the firm prides itself on its personal touch, deeply experienced leadership team, and commitment to maintaining independence in an increasingly consolidated industry.

This team works across a wide range of residential, commercial, and insurance‑driven investigative projects, bringing technical depth, clear communication, and rapid problem‑solving to every assignment. The firm values people who enjoy autonomy, meaningful responsibility, and contributing to a company where integrity, quality, and reputation truly come first.

About the Firm

With over 30 years in the forensic engineering, construction, and insurance space, the firm has built a respected reputation for providing thoughtful, accurate, and timely engineering evaluations. The leadership team collectively holds more than 90 years of industry experience, enabling them to respond efficiently to natural and man‑made disasters nationwide. The company has remained intentionally small and employee‑owned, believing that excellence, not scale, is what drives long‑term success.

Team members describe it as a place where:

Collaboration is central - engineers and managers work closely across regions to deliver clear, defensible findings.
Contribution matters - every employee has direct access to leadership, with opportunities for ownership for those who demonstrate long‑term commitment.
People come first - the firm avoids private‑equity pressures, unrealistic revenue targets, and burnout culture in favor of balance, fairness, and sustainable growth.

The company is led by a CEO with over 30 years of experience in structural inspections, catastrophe operations, and forensic engineering management. Having previously worked for large national firms, he founded the company to create an engineer‑first organization focused on quality, responsiveness, and ethics.

The Role

The Structural Engineer will support the firm's strategic expansion into the Midwest, leveraging an existing client base that has long requested a local presence. This is a high‑impact role for an engineer who enjoys autonomy, field work, and managing client relationships.

As the regional lead, the engineer will be involved in:

  • Residential and commercial structural inspections
  • Forensic evaluations following natural disasters, construction defects, or insurance claims
  • Field investigations across the Midwest region
  • Coordination with clients, colleagues, and company leadership
  • Preparation of detailed structural reports and expert documentation

This is a full‑time, primarily field‑based role with travel averaging two days per week, increasing during severe weather seasons.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct structural assessments for residential and commercial properties.
  • Perform forensic engineering investigations following storm, impact, settlement, or construction‑related damage.
  • Develop clear, defensible engineering reports for insurance carriers, attorneys, and property owners.
  • Serve as the regional representative, helping build and maintain client relationships.
  • Manage field inspections, site documentation, and project timelines.
  • Collaborate with the firm's engineering managers and leadership to support regional growth.

Required Qualifications

  • B.S. in Civil or Structural Engineering (P.E. preferred; ability to obtain licensure required).
  • 3-10 years of experience in structural engineering, forensic engineering, or related investigative fields.
  • Strong technical competency in structural evaluation of wood, steel, concrete, and masonry structures.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, particularly in technical reporting.
  • Ability to travel regionally (average 2 days/week, up to 4 days during peak seasons).
  • Strong professional judgement, self‑motivation, and comfort working independently.

Benefits & Perks

The firm offers a competitive compensation and benefit package, including:

  • Base salary range: $100,000-$150,000
  • Bonus potential averaging $20,000-$50,000 during storm seasons
  • Opportunity for ownership after one year based on long‑term commitment
  • Paid time off and holidays
  • Health and dental benefits
  • Supportive leadership and long‑term career stability
  • Balanced workloads with realistic deadlines-no private‑equity pressure

Why This Opportunity Stands Out

Projects with purpose - engineers support communities recovering from natural disasters and unexpected losses.
Employee‑owned culture - leadership invests in people, not shareholder returns.
Independence from private equity - no aggressive revenue targets, forced growth, or burnout culture.
High earning potential - strong bonus structures tied to busy seasons.
Long‑term stability - the firm's reputation and decades of success drive consistent demand.
A place to grow - as regional lead, the engineer can shape the Midwest practice and pursue ownership.
