Lead BAS Design Engineer
We are seeking an experienced Lead Design Engineer to join our Building Automation team. This individual will provide technical leadership for the design, development, and delivery of Building Automation System (BAS) and HVAC controls solutions across commercial, healthcare, higher education, life sciences, industrial, data center, and mission-critical facilities.
The Lead Design Engineer will be responsible for overseeing project design standards, mentoring engineering teams, coordinating with clients and project stakeholders, and ensuring high-quality system designs that meet project requirements, codes, energy-efficiency goals, and operational objectives.
This role combines advanced technical expertise with leadership responsibilities and offers the opportunity to play a key role in delivering innovative smart building solutions.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership
- Lead the design and development of Building Automation and HVAC Controls systems from concept through commissioning.
- Establish and maintain engineering standards, best practices, and quality control procedures.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to Design Engineers, Controls Engineers, and Project Engineers.
- Serve as the engineering subject matter expert for complex controls applications and system integrations.
- Review and approve engineering deliverables before customer submission.
System Design
- DesignBAS architectures including:
- HVAC Controls
- Central Plant Controls
- Chiller Systems
- Boiler Systems
- Air Handling Units
- VAV Systems
- Energy Management Systems
- Laboratory Controls
- Critical Environment Controls
- Develop points lists, sequence of operations, control drawings, riser diagrams, and network architecture drawings.
- Produce detailed engineering submittal packages and construction documentation.
- Design IP-based building networks utilizing BACnet/IP, Modbus TCP, MQTT, and related protocols.
Project Delivery
- Collaborate with Project Managers to support successful project execution.
- Participate in project discovery, design meetings, and customer presentations.
- Review project specifications and ensure compliance with contractual requirements.
- Support commissioning, startup, functional testing, and troubleshooting activities.
- Assist in resolving complex technical issues throughout project lifecycles.
Client & Stakeholder Management
- Act as a trusted technical advisor for customers, consulting engineers, contractors, and facility operators.
- Lead technical discussions with end-users and design teams.
- Support business development efforts through design reviews, estimating support, and solution development.
- Present engineering solutions to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Innovation & Continuous Improvement
- Support implementation of smart building technologies and analytics platforms.
- Evaluate emerging BAS technologies and industry trends.
- Drive standardization initiatives to improve engineering efficiency and project delivery.
- Promote cybersecurity best practices within building automation systems.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in:
- Mechanical Engineering
- Electrical Engineering
- Controls Engineering
- Mechatronics Engineering
- Related Engineering Discipline
- 8+ years of experience within Building Automation, HVAC Controls, or Smart Buildings.
- Demonstrated experience leading engineering design efforts on complex BAS projects.
- Strong understanding of HVAC systems and mechanical building infrastructure.
- Experience producing controls design documentation and engineering submittals.
- Ability to lead technical teams and mentor junior engineers.
