Lead SCADA Engineer

Position Overview

A leading power and energy engineering organization is seeking an experienced Lead SCADA Engineering Manager to oversee the design, integration, testing, and commissioning of SCADA and control systems supporting utility, renewable energy, energy storage, transmission, substation, and critical infrastructure projects.

This role combines technical leadership, project execution, client interaction, and team development. The successful candidate will serve as the technical lead on complex SCADA projects while mentoring engineers, ensuring high-quality deliverables, and driving successful project outcomes across multiple simultaneous engagements.


Key Responsibilities

Technical Leadership

  • Lead the design, configuration, testing, and commissioning of SCADA and automation systems for substation, generation, energy storage, and utility infrastructure projects.
  • Serve as the technical lead responsible for project execution, engineering quality, and deliverable development.
  • Develop and implement engineering execution strategies to ensure successful project delivery.
  • Assign technical responsibilities and provide guidance to engineering team members throughout project execution.
  • Review engineering designs, programming, communications architecture, and integration strategies.
  • Provide mentorship, training, and technical leadership to junior and mid-level engineers.

Project Execution

  • Support project planning efforts, including technical scope definition, schedule development, risk assessment, and resource allocation.
  • Collaborate closely with project managers to align technical execution with overall project objectives.
  • Monitor technical progress and recommend mitigation plans for project risks and challenges.
  • Manage multiple projects concurrently while coordinating geographically distributed teams.

Client & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Present technical solutions to clients and stakeholders.
  • Participate in engineering reviews, technical meetings, and project discussions.
  • Respond to technical inquiries and provide clear recommendations regarding system architecture, implementation, and operational considerations.
  • Support proposal development, technical pursuits, and business growth initiatives.

Quality & Continuous Improvement

  • Conduct technical reviews and quality assurance checks for project deliverables.
  • Ensure compliance with organizational quality standards, engineering procedures, and industry best practices.
  • Participate in peer reviews and independent technical evaluations of projects across multiple engineering disciplines.
  • Contribute to the development and improvement of engineering standards, templates, and processes.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related technical discipline.

  • Active Professional Engineer (PE or P.Eng.) license required.

  • Demonstrated experience leading engineering project execution within the power, utility, or energy sector.

  • Extensive experience with SCADA, automation, and communication systems used in utility and industrial environments.

  • Strong knowledge of:

    • DNP3
    • Modbus
    • IEC 61850
    • RTUs
    • RTACs
    • HMI development
    • Industrial communication networks
    • Protocol testing and system integration
  • Experience programming, configuring, and integrating SCADA and control system architectures.

  • Knowledge of telemetry requirements and operational communications associated with utility-scale infrastructure projects.

  • Familiarity with transmission system operators, regional grid operators, and utility communication requirements.

  • Strong Microsoft Office proficiency.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Engineering or a related discipline.

  • Previous experience within an engineering consulting environment.

  • 8+ years of experience designing and implementing SCADA systems for:

    • Utility substations
    • Renewable generation facilities
    • Battery energy storage systems
    • Transmission infrastructure
    • Critical facilities and large industrial projects
  • Experience integrating vendor-specific SCADA and control systems into centralized operational platforms.

  • Knowledge of applicable industry standards, codes, and regulatory requirements.

  • Experience developing custom automation logic, control schemes, and advanced SCADA functionality.

  • Strong understanding of power system operations, telemetry requirements, and grid compliance considerations.
