About the Opportunity
A leading manufacturer of custom-engineered power distribution and control equipment is seeking a skilled Mechanical Designer / Drafter to join its growing engineering team. This organization designs and delivers complex electrical infrastructure solutions that support industrial, utility, commercial, and critical facility projects across North America.
This position offers the opportunity to work in a collaborative manufacturing environment where engineering professionals have direct involvement in product development, design innovation, and production support.
Position Overview
The Mechanical Designer / Drafter will be responsible for developing detailed mechanical designs, fabrication drawings, and 3D models for custom-engineered equipment and enclosure-based systems. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience with sheet metal design, manufacturing principles, and CAD modeling while working closely with engineering, production, and quality teams to ensure designs are manufacturable and meet project requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Create and maintain detailed 3D models, assemblies, and fabrication drawings using Autodesk Inventor.
- Design sheet metal components, structures, and equipment enclosures for manufacturing and assembly.
- Generate bills of materials (BOMs), flat patterns, fabrication packages, and engineering documentation.
- Manage drawing revisions, documentation, and engineering workflows through a PDM/Vault system.
- Collaborate with electrical and mechanical engineering teams to ensure seamless equipment integration.
- Support manufacturing operations by resolving design, fit-up, fabrication, and assembly challenges.
- Participate in product standardization and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Ensure compliance with project specifications, quality requirements, and manufacturing best practices.
- Coordinate with production, supply chain, and quality teams to support project execution schedules.
- Maintain accurate engineering records and revision control throughout the design lifecycle.
Required Qualifications
- 5+ years of mechanical design and drafting experience.
- Strong proficiency with Autodesk Inventor or similar 3D CAD software.
- Demonstrated experience in sheet metal design and development.
- Experience creating and managing complex assemblies and fabrication drawings.
- Strong understanding of manufacturing processes, fabrication methods, and assembly practices.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with AutoCAD 2D.
- Background designing industrial equipment, electrical enclosures, switchgear, control panels, or power distribution systems.
- Familiarity with medium-voltage or low-voltage electrical equipment.
- Experience working in a manufacturing or production-focused engineering environment.
